The susceptibility to recombination of a plasmid inserted into a chromosome varies with its genomic position. This recombination position effect is known to correlate with the average G+C content of the flanking sequences. Here we propose that this effect could be mediated by changes in the susceptibility to superhelical duplex destabilization that would occur. We use standard nonparametric sta...

The virulence plasmids pYV019, pYV8081, and pIB1 from Yersinia pestis, Yersinia enterocolitica, and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, respectively, were characterized by restriction endonuclease analysis. The three plasmids exhibited a region of common DNA previously shown to encode determinants which confer Ca2+ dependence. The plasmids from Y. pestis and Y. pseudotuberculosis were similar througho...

Campylobacter jejuni strains from 11 outbreaks were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility, plasmid profile, and serotyping by the methods of Lior et al. and Penner and Hennessy. All 31 strains were susceptible to erythromycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, tobramycin, streptomycin, and gentamicin. A total of 21 strains from nine outbreaks were resistant to one or more of the ...

The presence of large plasmids in 30 Rhodococcus equi strains isolated from pig lymph nodes with granulomatous changes was investigated. Plasmid DNAs were isolated and digested with the restriction endonucleases BamHI, EcoRI, EcoT22I and HindIII for detailed comparison and estimation of plasmid sizes. A total of nine isolates were identified as intermediately virulent (VapB-positive), harbourin...

A total of 36 European Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato cerebrospinal fluid isolates (mainly from southern Germany) were analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) for large restriction fragment pattern (LRFP) and linear plasmid profiles. Analyzing this large panel of isolates, we detected all three species of B. burgdorferi sensu lato pathogenic for humans in cerebrospinal fluid from p...

Plasmid DNA was isolated, and profiles of a variety of clinical and environmental isolates of Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, and Mycobacterium scrofulaceum (MAIS) were compared to determine whether plasmid DNA content would be useful as an epidemiological marker for these environmental pathogens. Since plasmids are common in clinical isolates and are stable during culture an...

As a result of the ever increasing problem of multiresistant bacteria, we instituted a surveillance program with the aim of identifying the basic molecular properties of ESBL in our environment. About 197 isolates of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were selected and tested for ESBL production and antimicrobial susceptibility. Plasmid profiles were determined and curing ability was te...

pMV120 was reported to carry the tetracycline resistance (Tcr) determinant of class N. We obtained tetracycline-susceptible transconjugants harboring plasmids with restriction enzyme profiles indistinguishable from those of pMV120 isolated from tetracycline-resistant clones. We conclude that pMV120 is a cryptic plasmid and that class N of Tcr determinants does not exist.

Four strains of yellow-pigmented enterococci that resembled the species Enterococcus casseliflavus were isolated from patients who had undergone surgical treatment. They were substantially homologous in terms of biochemical properties, antibiotic susceptibilities, and plasmid DNA profiles. Yellow-pigmented enterococci could be another potentially important cause of nosocomial infection in surgi...

The wide usage of antibiotics contributes to the increase in the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant Salmonella. Plasmids play a critical role in horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance markers in Salmonella. This study aimed to screen and characterize plasmid profiles responsible for antibiotic resistance in Salmonella and ultimately to clarify the molecular mechanism of transferable plasm...
