Influenza virus RNA was amplified by a continuous-flow polydimethylsiloxane microfluidic RT-PCR chip within 15-20 min. The amplified influenza virus RNA was observed with the naked eye, as the red color at the test line, using a lateral flow immunoassay within 1 min.

A stretchable Li4 Ti5 O12 anode and a LiFePO4 cathode with 80% stretchability are prepared using a 3D interconnected porous polydimethylsiloxane sponge based on sugar cubes. 82% and 91% capacity retention for anode and cathode are achieved after 500 stretch-release cycles. Slight capacity decay of 6% in the battery using the electrode in stretched state is observed.

The microbial degradation of low-molecular-weight polydimethylsiloxanes was investigated through laboratory experiments. Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane was found to be biodegraded under anaerobic conditions in composted sewage sludge, as monitored by the occurrence of the main polydimethylsiloxane degradation product, dimethylsilanediol, compared to that found in experiments with sterilized contr...

Coordination bonds are effective for constructing functional self-healing materials due to their tunable bond strength and metal-ion-induced functionalities. In this work, we incorporate a cobalt(II) triazole complex into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The resulting polymers show solvatochromic behaviour as well as self-healing properties.

This report discusses the method for the fabrication of microchannels. Microchannel production is a two step process. First, soft photolithography methods are implemented to fabricate a reusable mold. The mold is then used to create the microchannel, which consists of polydimethylsiloxane, or PDMS, and glass. Bio-related applications are also discussed.

Silicone microspheres are exceedingly difficult to make. Here, polydimethylsiloxane microspheres (≈1 μm diameter) are synthesized using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis, the first demonstration of a scalable synthetic procedure for crosslinked silicone microspheres. This continuous, aerosol process is also used to directly produce fluorescent, magnetic, and copolymeric derivatives; the potential biom...

Micropatterning of cells can be used in combination with microposts to control cell shape or cell-to-cell interaction while measuring cellular forces. The protocols in this chapter describe how to make SU8 masters for stamps and microposts, how to use soft lithography to replicate these structures in polydimethylsiloxane, and how to functionalize the surface of the microposts for cell attachment.

Residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) obtained in a stretched polydimethylsiloxane gel are applied to determine the 7-membered ring conformation in a 2-phenyl-3-benzazepine derivative, and to simultaneously assign all methylene proton pairs using only (1)D(CH) RDCs and DFT molecular modelling data.
