In this paper we summarize some results on constructing preference relations from criterion values, in the framework of multiple criteria decision making. First we recall two types of methods to build a comprehensive preference model. Then we show how to construct crisp and fuzzy preferences from criterion evaluations.

Leisure travel has become a topic of great interest to Taiwanese residents in recent years. Most residents expect to be able to relax on a vacation during the holidays; however, the complicated procedure of travel itinerary planning is often discouraging and leads them to abandon the idea of traveling. In this paper, we design an automatic travel itinerary planning system for the domestic area ...

Weighted aggregation of fuzzy preference relations on the set of alternatives by several criteria in decision-making problems is considered. Pairwise comparisons with respect to importance of the criteria are given in fuzzy preference relation as well. The aggregation procedure uses the composition between each two relations of the alternatives. The membership function of the newly constructed ...

Although there is existing work on learning user preferences in various systems, the outputs of such systems tend to be confusing to users. Studies of users interacting with such systems show that when the system incorrectly predicts a user's preference, the user may attempt to correct the views of the system (for instance, by randomly providing more training examples). In many cases, however, ...

The study investigates learning patterns during goal-directed preference formation. A longitudinal experiment examines formation of attribute importance judgments in the context of contingency relations between a stable consumer goal and alternative product attributes. The results suggest the learning curve in consumers’ attribute importance judgments can be analyzed using nested models to reve...

Conversational recommenders can help users find their most preferred item among a large range of options, a task that we call preference-based search. Motivated by studies in the field of behavioral decision theory, we take a user centric design perspective, focusing on the trade-off between decision accuracy and user effort. We consider example-critiquing, a methodology based on showing exampl...

We consider how to combine the preferences of multiple agents despite the presence of incompleteness and incomparability in their preference orderings. An agent’s preference ordering may be incomplete because, for example, there is an ongoing preference elicitation process. It may also contain incomparability, which can be useful, for example, in multi-criteria scenarios. We focus on the proble...

We demonstrate how supervised discriminative machine learning techniques can be used to automate the assessment of ‘English as a Second or Other Language’ (ESOL) examination scripts. In particular, we use rank preference learning to explicitly model the grade relationships between scripts. A number of different features are extracted and ablation tests are used to investigate their contribution...

This chapter introduces the concept of improving student memory retention using a distance learning tool by establishing the student’s communication preference and learning style before the student uses the module contents. It argues that incorporating a distance learning tool with an intelligent/interactive tutoring system using various components (psychometric tests, communication preference ...

Representing (and reasoning about) preference relations over combinatorial domains is computationally expensive. We argue that for many problems involving such preferences, it is relevant to simplify them by projecting them on a subset of variables. We investigate several possible definitions, focusing without loss of generality on propositional (binary) variables. We then define the notion of ...
