We consider the problem of multiple sequence alignment: given k sequences of length at most n and a certain scoring function, find an alignment that minimizes the corresponding "sum of pairs" distance score. We generalize the divide-and-conquer technique described in [1,2], and present new ideas on how to use efficient search strategies for saving computer memory and accelerating the procedure ...

Of the approximately 7,000 languages spoken today, some 2,500 are generally considered endangered. Here we argue that this consensus figure vastly underestimates the danger of digital language death, in that less than 5% of all languages can still ascend to the digital realm. We present evidence of a massive die-off caused by the digital divide.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have merged into the world of healthcare slowly but surely. However, the marriage between the use of technology and its full impact in the health sector has not been fully realised. The focus of this paper is to highlight the impact of ICT on revolutionising access to healthcare information and thus quality of health for populations of the develo...

This research examined the effects of instructional set on Internet use by low-income adults during a 16-month longitudinal study. Participants (n = 117) received instructions that focused on either the Internet's communication tools or its information tools. Internet use was continuously and automatically recorded. Survey measures of computer and Internet experiences, affect and attitudes were...

This working paper analyzes the rapid diffusion of the Internet across the United States over the past decade for both households and firms. The authors put the Internet’s diffusion into the context of economic diffusion theory where they consider costs and benefits on the demand and supply side. They also discuss several pictures of the Internet’s physical presence using some of the current ma...

Purpose: Reviews e-literacy in the context of Internet use and non-use by older people. Discusses the perceived barriers to Internet use and provides suggestions as to how the “grey” digital divide can be reduced. Methodology: Reviews literature but draws heavily on survey research conducted in Derbyshire and Scotland. Findings: Although the United Kingdom (UK) population is currently ageing an...

This research aims at investigating the preferences of teaching staff and students about the use of ICT in private and academic lives, and weather this distinction is made according to their exposure to various ICT during their life stages or not. This qualitative investigation used semistructured interviews with sixty first-year students and thirty teaching staff participants from blindly sele...

In this paper we give a procedure to search for prime divisors of class numbers of real abelian fields and present a table of odd primes < 10000 not dividing the degree that divide the class numbers of fields of conductor ≤ 2000. Cohen–Lenstra heuristics allow us to conjecture that no larger prime divisors should exist. Previous computations have been largely limited to prime power conductors.
