In the course of a screening program for novel antibiotics showing antitumor activity, a cyclic peptide antibiotic sohbumycin was isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. No. 82-85, which had been isolated from a soil sample collected in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. The isolation and physico-chemical properties of sohbumycin and fermentation and taxonomy of the producing organism, Str...

Using density functional theory calculations, here we show that a series of B(x)Au(x)2- (x = 5-12) dianions possesses structure and bonding similar to the famous deltahedral closo-borane cages, B(x)H(x)2-. Effective atomic charges on Au in B(x)Au(x)2- are very similar to those on H in B(x)H(x)2-, indicating that Au in the closo-auroboranes is indeed analogous to H in the closo-boranes. The pres...

The goal of this paper is to express the Bach tensor of a four– dimensional conformal geometry of an arbitrary signature by the Cartan normal conformal (CNC) connection. We show that the Bach tensor can be identified with the Yang–Mills current of the connection. It follows from that result that a conformal geometry whose CNC connection is reducible in an appropriate way has a degenerate Bach t...

Six BiOX1-xYx (X, Y = F, Cl, Br, and I) solid solutions have been systematically investigated by density functional theory calculations. BiOCl1-xBrx, BiOBr1-xIx, and BiOCl1-xIx solid solutions have very small bowing parameters; as such, some of their properties increase almost linearly with increasing x. For BiOF1-xYx solid solutions, the bowing parameters are very large and it is extremely dif...

MoS2 is a two-dimensional material that is gaining prominence due to its unique electronic and chemical properties. Here, we demonstrate ligand conjugation of chemically exfoliated MoS2 using thiol chemistry. With this method, we modulate the ζ-potential and colloidal stability of MoS2 sheets through ligand designs, thus enabling its usage as a selective artificial protein receptor for β-galact...

Solvent-gelator interactions play a key role in mediating organogel formation and ultimately determine the physico-chemical properties of the organogels and xerogels. The ethanol organogels of 1,4-bis[(3,4,5-trihexyloxy phenyl)hydrazide]phenylene (TC6) were investigated in situ by FT-IR, Raman and fluorescence spectra, and XRD, and it was confirmed that the intermolecular interaction and aggreg...

Crystallographic investigations deliver high-accuracy information about positions of atoms in crystal unit cells. For chemists, however, the structure of a molecule is most often of interest. The structure must thus be reconstructed from crystallographic files using symmetry information and chemical properties of atoms. Most existing algorithms faithfully reconstruct separate molecules but not ...

Self-assembled monolayers of aromatic molecules on copper substrates can be converted into high-quality single-layer graphene using low-energy electron irradiation and subsequent annealing. This two-dimensional solid state transformation is characterized on the atomic scale and the physical and chemical properties of the formed graphene sheets are studied by complementary microscopic and spectr...

The ageing of the bitumen during storage, mixing, transport and laying on the road, as well as in service life, are the most important problems presented by the use of bitumen in pavements. This paper investigates the possibility of using waste cooking oil (WCO), which is a waste material that pollutes landfills and rivers, as an alternative natural rejuvenating agent for aged bitumen to a cond...

Robert Rosen's concept of (M,R)-systems was a fundamental advance in our understanding of the essential nature of a living organism as a self-organizing system, one that is closed to efficient causation, synthesizing, and maintaining all of the catalysts necessary for sustained operation during the whole period of its lifetime. Although it is not difficult to construct a model metabolic system ...
