The 70-year history of scientific endeavor of solid state ionics research in Japan is reviewed to show the contribution of Japanese scientists to the basic science of solid state ionics and its applications. The term 'solid state ionics' was defined by Takehiko Takahashi of Nagoya University, Japan: it refers to ions in solids, especially solids that exhibit high ionic conductivity at a fairly ...

The capacitance and dielectric loss factor were measured for a sample of purple membrane of Halobacterium halobium as a function of hydration level (0.017 to >0.2 g of water/g of membrane) and frequency (10 kHz to 10 MHz). The capacitance and the derived conductivity show explosive growth above a threshold hydration level, h(c) approximately 0.0456. The conductivity shows a deuterium isotope ef...

The proton conductivity of a series of extruded Nafion membranes @of equivalent weight ~EW! of 1100 and nominal dry thickness of 51, 89, 127, and 178 mm# has been studied. Measurements were made in 1 M H2SO4 at 298 K using a four-electrode, dc technique. The membrane area resistance increases with thickness, as expected, from 0.07 to 0.16 V cm for Nafion 112 and Nafion 117, respectively. Howeve...

Imidazole was introduced into the channels of the metal-organic framework UiO-67 using an evaporation method. The imidazole@UiO-67 composite presents a high proton conductivity of 1.44 × 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 120 °C under anhydrous conditions. With a low activation energy at high temperatures (0.36 eV), the hybrid material can be regarded as a superionic conductor.

The reproducible formation of a 3D oxalate based coordination compound of formula (NH4)5[Mn(II)2Cr(III)3(ox)9]·10H2O, with an unusual Mn(II)/Cr(III) ratio, is presented. The original topology of the anionic network leads to antiferromagnetic long-range ordering whereas its guests favour high humidity-dependent proton conductivity.

In this communication, we demonstrate the successful incorporation of phosphate into Ba(2)In(2)O(5), which leads to the conversion from an orthorhombic to a cubic unit cell. The resulting increased oxygen vacancy disorder leads to an enhancement in the oxide ion conductivity at low temperatures. In addition, in wet atmospheres, significant proton conduction is observed.

We report on a facile spray deposition method, which allows obtaining nanocomposite membranes for high-temperature polymer fuel cells characterized by high homogeneity and excellent proton conductivity. The proposed method is also green, as it requires much smaller amounts of solvents with respect to standard casting.

A layer-by-layer assembled and molecular-complexed polymer membrane was prepared by the simple combination of poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) and poly(allylamine) on a comb-shaped gold electrode: it displayed a very high proton conductivity of 10(-3) S cm(-1) under a dry condition at 120 degrees C.

A novel sulfonated poly(4-phenoxypropylbenzoyl-1,4-phenylene) introducing a flexible alkyl chain was synthesized and achieved high proton conductivity even at low humidity (SPP: 0.077 S cm(-1), Nafion 112: 0.029 S cm(-1) at 80 degrees C 50% RH).

The present invention provides new compounds for use in proton exchangemembranes which are able to operate in a wide variety of temperature ranges, including in the intermediate temperature range of about 100° C. to 700°C., andnew and improved methods of making these compounds. The present invention also provides new and improved methods for making chalcogenide compounds, including, but not lim...
