We introduce geoplotlib, an open-source python toolbox for visualizing geographical data. geoplotlib supports the development of hardware-accelerated interactive visualizations in pure python, and provides implementations of dot maps, kernel density estimation, spatial graphs, Voronoi tesselation, shapefiles and many more common spatial visualizations. We describe geoplotlib design, functionali...

While world economy remains stagnant, enrollment in Computer Science suffers inevitably. A computer science educator must find innovative ways to inspire students for learning computing technologies. Active learning with “worked examples”, presented by Sweller and Cooper, has been proven to be an effective pedagogical strategy. However, when teaching Python with Game Building using the active l...

Stochastic simulations of biological systems vary widely in scope from reaction modules, to single cells, to cell colonies. While the same techniques for sampling the stochastic equations governing cellular processes apply to all these systems, the setup of the simulation volume and initial state for the simulations differ significantly. Lattice Microbes is a GPU accelerated stochastic biologic...

Backgrounds Many wild-caught reptiles harbor some kind of parasites. Captivity with negative effect of poor sanitary and husbandry management may lead to clinical disease. The increasing trend in keeping non-native reptile species in the last decade emerged a need for the specification of reptile parasites and their hosts. Objectives The study aims to gain data on intestinal parasites of repti...

We introduce pyndri, a Python interface to the Indri search engine. Pyndri allows to access Indri indexes from Python at two levels: (1) dictionary and tokenized document collection, (2) evaluating queries on the index. We hope that with the release of pyndri, we will stimulate reproducible, open and fastpaced IR research.

MidiKinesis is a Python package that maps MIDI control change events to user-de ned X events, with the purpose of controlling almost any graphical user interface using the buttons, dials, and sliders on a MIDI keyboard controller such as the Edirol PCR30. Key ingredients are Python modules providing access to the ALSA sequencer as well as the XTest standard extension.

We describe how Python can be leveraged to streamline the curation, modelling and dissemination of drug discovery data as well as the development of innovative, freely available tools for the related scientific community. We look at various examples, such as chemistry toolkits, machine-learning applications and web frameworks and show how Python can glue it all together to create efficient data...

The Python programming language is becoming increasingly popular for scientific applications due to its simplicity, versatility, and the broad range of its libraries. A drawback of this dynamic language, however, is its low runtime performance which limits its applicability for large simulations and for the analysis of large data sets, as is common in astrophysics and cosmology. While various f...
