Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are measured in wide parabolic quantum wells with 2 subbands occupied in tilted magnetic field. Experiments reveal anticrossing of the Landau level (LL) belonging to lowest subband and last LL belonging to the second subband. Such anticrossing occurs due to decrease of the energy of the LL with tilt angle Q: This observation is supported by the measurements of the...

Let A be entire. Suppose that there exists an unbounded quasidisk D such that A is sufficiently small in D. We prove that then any nontrivial solution to y" + Ay = 0 has at most one zero in D. We show that if A = Q exp P where P and Q are polynomials, one can usually take D to be an angle of opening x/n where n is the degree of P .

Motivated by the forthcoming data from the E950 experiment at BNL for small angle polarized proton-carbon scattering we revisit the problem of Coulomb phase. The approximation usually used, with the momentum transfer squared (q 2) small compared to the inverse elastic slope, is not justified within the kinematics of the E950 experiment. We go beyond this approximation and derive a new rather si...

When liquid is added to a foam at sufficiently large flow rates, convective bubble motion will occur. Experiments are described in which the foam is confined in a tube which is tilted from the vertical. The theory of foam drainage is applied to this problem to show that the critical angle of tilt theta(c) at which convection occurs is related to the liquid flow-rate Q by theta(c) proportional t...

Synthesis of structured macroporous TiO2 thin films on quartz substrate (macroTiO2/Q) was performed by a dip-coating method using poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres as template. Obtained TiO2 thin films kept high transparency and had anatase crystalline structure. SEM observations revealed that the macropores were uniformly formed on the film surface. The size of macropores was quite...

With the assumption that the X(1835) and η(1760) recently observed by the BES Collaboration are the 3 1 S 0 meson states, the strong decays of these two states are investigated in the 3 P 0 decay model. We find that the predicted total widths of the X(1835) and η(1760) can be reasonably reproduced with the X(18350) − η(1760) mixing angle lying on the range q ¯ q members seems reasonable.

It is impossible to comb all the hairs of a fuzzy ball so that: i) each hair lies tangent to the surface of the ball, and ii) the angles of the hairs vary continuously over the surface of the ball. (By this we mean that the angle between two hairs at positions p and q say can be made arbitrarily small by choosing q sufficiently close to p.) Any attempt to accomplish this feat must produce a cow...

This paper describes the implementation of a novel technique called Background Oriented Schlieren that can produce quantitative visualization of density in a flow. This technique uses only a digital still camera, a structured background, and inverse tomographic algorithms which can extract two-dimensional slices from a three-dimensional flow. This has been applied to obtain the density field fo...

An effort is made to evaluate the formulation of seismic active earth pressure behind a nonvertical retaining wall supporting c-Ф backfill. The formulation is prepared to get a single critical wedge surface for simultaneous action of weight, surcharge, cohesion and adhesion. The success of any retaining structure involves the awareness of seismic active earth pressure. The effect of various par...
