S U M M A R Y An approximate description of the zone of influence around the propagation path for a surface wave is provided by investigating the Fresnel zones for the frequency range of interest. The influence zone about surface wave paths, over which surface waves are coherent in phase, is identified as approximately one-third of the width of the first Fresnel zone. A technique called Fresnel...
High frequency methods resort to numerical ray tracing for application to complex environments. A new method based on the geometrical projection performed by a ray-congruence has been developed as a preconditioning of the ray tracing procedure. It builds a visibility tree, i.e., a database, storing information on all possible ray paths inside a scenario. The method gives a solution to a class o...
Recent electronic devices are equipped with processors extended with multicore accelerators to take advantage of the powerful performance from acceleration co-processors. Applications on such high-end electronic products require capability to run graphic-rich applications. Scalable acceleration co-processors are frequently designed as multicores with explicitly managed memories. Such multicore ...
We introduce a practical antialiasing approach for interactive ray tracing and path tracing. Our method is inspired by the Subpixel Reconstruction Antialiasing (SRAA) method which separates the shading from visibility and geometry sampling to produce antialiased images at reduced cost. While SRAA is designed for GPU-based deferred shading renderer, we extend the concept to ray-tracing based app...
In computer graphics, ray tracing is a popular technique for rendering images with computers. In this project we implemented a serial version of ray tracing in C, and three parallelized versions in CUDA. We conducted experiments to demonstrate speedup with CUDA, as well as the importance of balancing workload among threads.
A benchmark problem on atmospheric sound propagation over irregular terrain has been solved using a stable fourth-order accurate nite di erence approximation of a highdelity acoustic model. A comparison with the parabolic equation method and ray tracing methods is made. The results show that ray tracing methods can potentially be unreliable in the presence of irregular terrain.
To render an object by ray tracing, one or more rays are shot from the viewpoint through every pixel of the image plane. For reflective and refractive objects, especially for multiple levels of reflections and/or refractions, this requires many expensive intersection calculations. This paper presents a new method for accelerating ray-tracing of reflective and refractive objects by substituting ...
Ray tracing is a computer graphics technique capable of creating visual effects such as realistic soft shadows, reflections, refractions, motion blur, and depth of field. Historically considered computationally expensive, ray tracing is gaining in popularity as computing power (primarily the recent increase in the number of processor cores) continues to increase. This paper details an introduct...
Ray tracing is one of the most important techniques in computer graphics for rendering high quality and photorealistic pictures. In it, at least one ray is cast into the scene for each pixel of the image. If the ray hits an object, it may produce other rays, such as reflection, shadow, and refraction rays to determine the color of the associated pixel (see [1] for more details). Ray tracing dea...
Ray tracing [Appe68] [Gold71] is widely acknowledged as a rendering approach that can produce very realistic and beautiful images [Whit80]. It is also widely known that ray tracing is very expensive computationally. Many intersection culling algorithms have been proposed to reduce this expense. However, such intersection culling algorithms do not take into consideration the nature of the primit...
