A mvkrr is made of the techniqws that have been developed or are being developed in the United Kilngdon for flight vibration testing and flight flutter testing aircraft. This includes a description of the instnznentation used for recotiing the Vibratioml response, and a comparative assessment of the vaious methods used for exciting the aircraft in i'lipht flutter tests.

Exclamatives like What a dump!, Wow!, and Boy, you’ve grown! are, when uttered in context, rich in information about the speaker’s attitudes. Drawing on evidence from about 100, 000 online product reviews with associated meta-data, we develop a frequency-based characterization of this pragmatic contribution. This allows us to make precise predictions about the exclamativity that inheres in thes...

This paper describes an automated process for designing electrical circuits in which "What You Want Is What You Get" ("WYWIWYG" – pronounced "wow-eee-wig"). The design process uses genetic programming to produce both the topology of the desired circuit and the sizing (numerical values) for all the components of a circuit. Genetic programming successfully evolves both the topology and the sizing...

To build a platform for (high, sustainable) use, we need to know what will thrill users. Finding the right concoction of technology, functionality and design to delight users takes a thousand decisions, pivots and changes. The JSTOR Labs team has been using Flash Builds – high-intensity, short-burst, user-driven development efforts – in order to prototype new ideas and get to a user saying “Wow...

For Augmented Reality to reach beyond novelty (the simple “wow” factor) and become utilitarian and enjoyable regardless of where the user works or plays, there will need to be: • a nearly infinite amount of content, just as there is today on other digital platforms (e.g., the Web), • an easy system for the owners of content to build or find complementary digital data and have their content be v...

The IFTAC is a special purpose analog computer designed to take the direct Fourier transform of a recorded function C(t). The system uses a recorded time base generated by a monochromatic source in the interferometer to correct for any changes in velocity of motion of the movable mirror, and to compensate for wow and flutter and changes in velocity of the tape transport drive system. Introducti...

What are the situations in everyday life that people enjoy and cherish? This paper presents a content and user study with two simple mobile phone applications called PosiPost to investigate this question and learn what people express as their pleasures in everyday life. Drawing from a corpus of 379 PosiPost messages that users shared, this paper presents an analysis of users’ pleasurable moment...

A new style of charge-separation position-sensitive detector has been tested which has similar cost benefits as other charge-separation devices but has an error-awareness capability to provide an increased collection rate. The wedge-on-wedge anode is similar to the wedge-and-strip anode except that the four electrodes possess both wedge and strip character. This provides additional charge infon...

An interaction of plasma flow with an arc-anode attachment in a dc arc plasma torch was investigated. Statistical processing of the photographic images of plasma jet was used for analysis of an effect of the anode attachment on structure and stability of plasma flow. Deflection, flattening and flutter of the plasma jet was found to be caused by disturbing effect of the arc-anode attachment.

This review divides naturally into sections covering the war and postwar periods. Parts 1 and 3 give surveys of the work which came within the purview of the Aeronautical Research Committee until its reconstitution as a Council in 1945, and of the Council since that date, respectively. Part 2 describes matters concerned with the formation of the Council. (iv) A numerical list of papers publishe...
