Cardiac myxomas are the most common neoplasms of the heart. They can be located in any chamber of the heart but frequently in the left atrium. In this report we present a patient who had been treated for a right ventricular myxoma originating from the interventricular septum and leading to right ventricular outflow tract obstruction.
A12-year-old previously healthy girl developed syncope when walking at school. When she was seen in the emergency department, her heart rate was 115 bpm, the precordial impulse was active, and a thrill was palpated. Third and fourth heart sounds were heard. A grade 4/6 systolic ejection murmur was heard at the left upper sternal border. The chest x-ray demonstrated a mildly enlarged, globular h...
OBJECTIVE Acute pulmonary hypertension may cause right ventricular (RV) contractile failure. While it has been assumed that restoration of normal loading conditions after acute pulmonary hypertension is sufficient for complete recovery of RV function, this has not been rigorously examined. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that acute RV pressure overload produces RV contracti...
A 70-year-old man with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation was referred for pulmonary vein isolation. Past medical history included ischemic heart disease and a right hemicolectomy for Duke’s C carcinoma 10 years previously. Presenting ECG showed sinus rhythm with a normal axis and evidence of left atrial enlargement (Figure 1). Preoperative echocardiography demonstrated normal left ventricular stru...
A 42-year-old man presented with congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation. He had been diagnosed with endomyocardial fibrosis 8 years earlier and was stable on diuretics. He had congested neck veins, pedal edema, and massive ascites and a loud third heart sound. ECG confirmed atrial fibrillation. The chest radiograph showed massive cardiomegaly with a cardiothoracic ratio of 90%. Twodim...
IntroductionLittle is known about the use of newer generation's temporary mechanical circulatory (tMCS) device, Impella 5.5, in patients with restrictive cardiomyopathies.Case Report55-year old African-American male non-ischemic cardiomyopathy secondary to hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis and listed for heart transplantation, presented a right catheterization that showed increased biventric...
Background: Nowadays, the treatment of choice for anatomical correction of transposition of great arteries is arterial switch but some children are not good candidates for this operation. In these cases atrial switch or Senning procedure is an accepted method, thus outcome of this procedure needs to be better delineated. Methods: This prospective study included 65 patients that underwent Senni...
Only in recent years has the right ventricle (RV) function become appreciated to be equally important to the left ventricle (LV) function to maintain cardiac output. Right ventricular failure is, irrespectively of the etiology, associated with impaired exercise tolerance and poor survival. Since the anatomy and physiology of the RV is distinctly different than that of the LV, its adaptive mecha...
