We report the results of infrared and magneto-optical spectroscopy study on electrodynamic response of bismuth doped with 1.5% of antimony. The spectra are presented for temperatures down to 4.2 K, and in magnetic fields as high as 18 T. The results reveal strong magneto-optical activity, similar to pure bismuth, however there are some differences introduced by antimony doping. Analysis of opti...

The complete optical-gyration tensor for a monoclinic crystal of (2R, 3R)-(+)C4H6O6 has been determined by the tilter method at a wavelength of 680 nm. The tensor components in terms of rotatory power in relation to the principal axes of the indicatrix were found to be ρ◦ 11 = 79(7), ρ◦ 22 = 90(13), ρ◦ 33 = −70(4), ρ◦ 23 = −18(8)◦ mm−1 with ρ = −12.3(1.0)◦ mm−1 in the optic-axis directions. The...

The polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) can serve as a probe for nonstandard parity violating interactions. Many such interactions are predicted in particle physics models arising from theories with extra dimensions such as superstring theory. These interactions produce an optical activity that depends on the space-time nature of the parity violating field. In parti...

We investigate the amount of scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) when using optical long-slit Hα rotation curves to determine the velocity widths of spiral galaxies. We study a sample of 25 galaxies in the Coma region of the sky which were shown in Bernstein et al. (1994) to exhibit an extraordinarily low scatter of 0.10 mag RMS in the I magnitude vs 21-cm width TFR. Using the same I mag...

Non linear absorption is a non linear optical property which can be observed with large photon intensities and corresponds to instantaneous or sequential absorption of more than one photon. Highly polarisable molecules show high non linear optical activity and in the following it will be presented the multiphoton absorption properties of tetramethyltetratiafulvalene (TMTTF), its radical cation ...

From the analysis of high–quality optical rotation curves of 9 low–luminosity disk galaxies, we find that the properties of the dark halos around these objects are inconsistent with the halo density profile of the halos emerging in high resolution Cold Dark Matter N-body simulations. Dark halos around galaxies are almost constant density spheres, very different from the characteristic CDM ρ(r) ...

I present new comparisons of AGN optical, UV, and X-ray variations. These reveal complex relationships between the different passbands that can change with time in a given object. While there is evidence from several objects that X-ray and optical activity levels are correlated on long timescales, variations on shorter timescales can occur independently. It is proposed that the combination of c...

The usual methods for detecting the action of amylolytic enzymes on starch are confined to three types of measurements: (1) increase in reducing action; (2) decrease in viscosity; and (3) decrease in the color of the resulting dextrin-iodine complex. Optical methods based upon the changes in optical rotation (1) and upon the refractive indices of the individual split-products (2) have been less...

Rotation measures of pulsars and extragalactic point sources have been known to reveal largescale antisymmetries in the Faraday rotation sky with respect to the Galactic plane and halo that have been interpreted as signatures of the mean magnetic field in the Galactic halo. We describe Faraday rotation measurements of the diffuse Galactic polarized radio emission over a large region in the nort...
