Nonmagnetic particles in a carrier ferrofluid acquire an effective dipolar moment when placed in an external magnetic field. This fact leads them to form chains that will roughen due to Brownian motion when the magnetic field is decreased. We study this process through experiments, theory and simulations, three methods that agree on the scaling behavior over 5 orders of magnitude. The rms width...

A study of scalable data intensive scheduling involving load distribution on multi-level fat tree networks is presented. It is shown that the speedup of processing divisible loads concurrently on a homogeneous single level tree increases linearly as the number of processors is increased. This behavior is markedly different from that of past research on sequential scheduling where speedup satura...

We analyze the effect of typical, unknown perturbations on the 2D toric code when acting as a quantum memory, incorporating the effects of error correction on readout. By transforming the system into a 1D transverse Ising model undergoing an instantaneous quench, and making extensive use of Lieb-Robinson bounds, we prove that for a large class of perturbations, the survival time of stored infor...

interesting to note that these two Edinburgh Surgeons express a preference for C. E. mixture, consisting of one part of chloroform and two parts of ether. They condemn the A. C. E. mixture on account of the two latter ingredients evaporating more rapidly than the alcohol, which saturates the lint or sponge and prevents the chloroform or ether being taken up. Curiously enough no mention is made ...

We study the capacity with which a system of independent neuron-like units represents a given set of stimuli. We assume that each neuron provides a fixed amount of information and that the information provided by different neurons has a random overlap. We derive analytically the dependence of the mutual information between the set of stimuli and the neural responses on the number of units sampl...

New exact solutions for unsteady magnetohydrodynamic MHD flows of an Oldroyd-B fluid have been derived. The Oldroyd-B fluid saturates the porous space. Two different flow cases have been considered. The analytical expressions for velocity and shear stress fields have been obtained by using Laplace transform technique. The corresponding solutions for hydrodynamic OldroydB fluid in a nonporous sp...

Calculation of the tunneling magnetoresistance TMR of an Fe/MgO/Fe 001 junction with a disordered Fe/MgO interface is reported. It is shown that intermixing of Fe and Mg atoms at the interface decreases the TMR ratio rapidly and when about 16% of interfacial Fe atoms are substituted by Mg the calculated TMR saturates with increasing MgO thickness in good agreement with experiment. It is demonst...

Unitarity relates the total cross section for neutrino-nucleon scattering to the neutrino-nucleon forward scattering amplitude. Assuming the validity of the perturbative expansion of the forward amplitude in the weak coupling constant, we derive a unitarity bound on the inelastic cross section. The inelastic cross section saturates this bound at a typical neutrino energy Eν ≃ 108 GeV. This impl...

It is generally thought that mean luminance and low spatial frequency information in a visual image are sharply attenuated at the retina, due to processes of light adaptation and the spatial filtering effects of lateral inhibition. Our results from interocular luminance masking suggest, however, that cortical masking effects play a primary role in the attenuation of low frequency sensitivity. R...

Two concerns for the deployment of two stage actuators in disk drives are microactuator saturation and data recovery in the event of outright microactuator failure. Compensators designed for good performance with two intact actuators may be unstable when the microactuator saturates or stops working entirely. This paper develops a modification of the PQ Method to guarantee stable operation in th...
