Two new phenols, 2(S)-2',7-dihydroxy-5,8-dimethoxyflavanone and (S)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-6-methyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-pyran-4-one, were isolated from the ethanol extract of Scutellaria barbata. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis.
BACKGROUND Protease inhibitors, particularly ritonavir, causes significant gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, even at low doses. This ritonavir-induced nausea could be related to its oxidative stress in the gut. Alleviation of drug-induced nausea is important in effectively increasing patients' compliance and improving their quality of life. Conventional anti-emetic drugs can only pa...
Many tyrosinase inhibitors have been alleged to have serious side effects. To search for relatively mild and safe tyrosinase inhibitors, two new 8-O-4′ neolignans, named huangnin A (1) and B (2), and four known analogs (3-6) were isolated from the seeds of Crataegus pinnatifida. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses (1D, 2D NMR, HRESIMS, CD and Rh2(OCOCF3)4-induced CD). In ...
The Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai, is a highly valued and industrially important aquaculture species with growing demands of the expanding abalone industry. To explore feasibility using brown alga, Sargassum horneri, as potential substitute for feed, it to identify feed preference attractant effect S. horneri on abalone. Our experiments indicated that feeding-associated movement could...
The sea urchin, Mesocentrotus nudus, is widely distributed in North West Pacific regions. It has a substantial impact on macroalgal communities as generalist herbivore. This study examined various aspects of its feeding ecology, including algal preference, foraging behaviors, and possible effects past history preference. We used six common species (Ulva australis, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum...
