Apnea, the suspension of breathing, is a condition that affects millions of people; many of whom are completely unaware of the condition. Apnea can contribute to a variety of life threatening medical conditions. Clarkson Honors student Douglas Dawson has designed a system for portable apnea detection and user notification through the use of a microprocessor controlled blood oxygen sensor. I pro...
O₂ sensors were used to non-destructively monitor O₂ levels in commercially packed pre-cooked, convenience modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) foods. A substantial level of O₂ (>15%) was present in packs resulting in a shorter than expected shelf-life, where the primary spoilage mechanism was found to be mould. Various combinations of vacuum (0-0.6 MPa) and gas flush (0.02-0.03 MPa) (30% CO₂/70...
Although many researchers have begun to study the area of Cyber Physical Social Sensing (CPSS), few are focused on robotic sensors. We successfully utilize robots in CPSS, and propose a sensor trajectory planning method in this paper. Trajectory planning is a fundamental problem in mobile robotics. However, traditional methods are not suited for robotic sensors, because of their low efficiency,...
OBJECTIVE In this study, we aimed to discuss the level of knowledge and approach on 'maintenance, calibration and cleaning of anaesthesia devices' among anaesthesiologists in Turkey. METHODS A questionnaire was prepared with 21 questions based on the Google document system, and these questionnaires were sent to the anaesthesiologists via e-mail. RESULTS Overall, 226 anaesthesiologists answe...
A new method of respiration rate measurement based on oxygen luminescence quenching in sensor spots was evaluated for the first time for aquatic bacterial communities. The commonly used Winkler and Clark electrode methods to quantify oxygen concentration both require long incubation times, and the latter additionally causes signal drift due to oxygen consumption at the cathode. The sensor spots...
A screen-printed dissolved oxygen sensor was fabricated using cerium oxide-supported silver catalyst and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. A PDMS film of 3 µm thickness showed good permeability for oxygen and impermeability for hydrogen peroxide. The calibration curve has shown a linear relationship with a correlation coefficient of 0.996 for the dissolved oxygen concentration. The sensitivi...
A transcutaneous oxygen sensor was used to detect the development of hypoxemia in patients undergoing fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Measurements of transcutaneous PO2 (tcPO2) correlated well with arterial PO2 (PaO2), and correctly detected all instances when PaO2 was less than 65 mm Hg. The sensor was noninvasive and caused no adverse effects.
Emissions from modern SI-engines are reduced by a three way catalyst. However if there are leaks in the exhaust system before the catalyst emissions increase for two reasons. First the untreated emissions leak out. Second which is worse, due to waves in the exhaust system, oxygen leaks into the manifold and causes an oxygen sensor offset. The result is increased emissions as the air/fuel contro...
The sensor kinase NreB from Staphylococcus carnosus contains an O(2)-sensitive [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster which is converted by O(2) to a [2Fe-2S](2+) cluster, followed by complete degradation and formation of Fe-S-less apo-NreB. NreB.[2Fe-2S](2+) and apoNreB are devoid of kinase activity. NreB contains four Cys residues which ligate the Fe-S clusters. The accessibility of the Cys residues to alkylat...
We address the problem of a swarm of autonomous mobile robotic sensors generating geometric shapes to build wireless ad hoc surveillance sensor networks. Robot swarms with limited observation are required to form different shapes under different task conditions. To do this, we propose decentralized coordination enabling a robot swarm dispersed across an area to form a desired shape. Our approac...
