Shiga toxins (Stx) are primarily associated with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli and Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1. Stx production by other shigellae is uncommon, but in 2014, Stx1-producing S. sonnei infections were detected in California. Surveillance was enhanced to test S. sonnei isolates for the presence and expression of stx genes, perform DNA subtyping, describe clinical and epi...
The methanolic extract of the leaf-stalk of curcuma longa LINN, was tested for its minimum Inhibitor concentration (MIC) against Gram positive-staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus subtilis, klebsiella pnemoniae, bacillus cereus, streptococcus pneumoniae, Lactobacillus arabinosus and gram negative E.coli, shigella dysenteriae, shigella sonnei, shigella boydii, salmonella typhimurium...
Class 2 integrons (Tn7) were found in all randomly selected epidemic (n = 27) and preepidemic (n = 13) strains of multiresistant Shigella sonnei biotype g. A class 1 integron was also found in two epidemic strains. Gene cassettes within these integrons account for resistance to commonly used therapeutic agents.
Shigellosis is an acute diarrheal disease caused by bacteria of the genus Shigella. Following the occurrence of a large outbreak of shigellosis as well as sporadic cases since 1998, shigellosis has been a major health problem in Korea. There have been major changes in epidemiology during the last five decades concerning shigellosis in terms of total incidence of shigellosis, prevalence of certa...
A bacteriophage-typing schema was developed for differentiating strains of Shigella sonnei. Sixty-seven bacteriophages were obtained from other collections, and 36 bacteriophages were isolated from sewage. From these 103 bacteriophages, a provisional set of 12 was chosen by computer analysis as being the most sensitive in differentiating strains of S. sonnei isolated in the United States. The p...

introduction: awareness of the species of shigella has particular importance in the way of dealing with an outbreak, controlling it, and treating patients. the purpose of this study was to use the multiplex pcr method and comparison with the culture method to detect shigella species, as well as analysing the antibiotic resistance pattern in its different species. methods: simultaneously, the fe...
background and objective: over 165 million cases of shigellosis occur in the world each year, mostly in developing countries. outbreaks of shigellosis are associated with poor sanitation, natural calamities, contaminated food and crowded living conditions. in late summer 2006, during the final stage of an outbreak of shigellosis at a vast region of isfahan province, naein & ardestan, our labora...
BACKGROUND Approximately 164,000 deaths yearly are due to shigellosis, primarily in developing countries. Thus, a safe and affordable Shigella vaccine is an important public health priority. The GSK Vaccines Institute for Global Health (GVGH) developed a candidate Shigella sonnei vaccine (1790GAHB) using the Generalized Modules for Membrane Antigens (GMMA) technology. The paper reports results ...
To elucidate the bacterial etiology of childhood diarrhoea in Dhahira, 856 children < 12 years admitted for diarrhoea to Ibri Regional Referral Hospital from 2000 to 2002 were studied. The mean age was 2.4 (SD 2.3) years; the majority (92.9%) were < 5 years. Bacterial etiology was found in 15.2% of cases; 10.6% due to Shigella and 2.1% to Salmonella. Sh. sonnei was the commonest Shigella serogr...
