A phosphoniafluorene and a spirobiphosphoniafluorene bearing 4-(diethylamino)styryl groups were synthesized. These compounds exhibited bathochromically shifted absorption and emission, compared with their silicon analogues, because of the strong acceptor property of the phosphonium core.
