Persistent infection with high-risk HPV, particularly Type HPV 16 and 18, is necessary in the development of cervical cancer, but apart from HPV infection, other causative factors of most cervical cancers remain unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HPV 16 and HPV 18 and HSV 1 and HSV 2 in cervical samples, and to assess the role of HSVs in cervical carcinogenesis. T...
Infections with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPV), mainly HPV type 16, can cause malignant transformation of the human cervical epithelium and the development of cervical cancer (CxCa). A rapid and precise diagnosis of the precancerous lesions by conventional cytology or HPV DNA tests remains difficult and often leads to overtreatment. We quantitatively analyzed the HPV16 transcriptome of ...
Background and aims: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide and the 13th in Jordan. The cervical smear (Pap smear) is a simple approach to detect pre-cancerous cervical lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of abnormal cervical smears in women seen at the Early Detection/Community Outreach clinic of King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC). Material...
We performed p16(INK4a) immunocytochemical analysis and Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2; Digene, Gaithersburg, MD) high-risk HPV testing on 210 abnormal SurePath (TriPath Imaging, Burlington, NC) Papanicolaou specimens diagnosed as low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) or high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL). The results were compared with 121 follow-up biopsy specimens. p16(INK4a...
BACKGROUND The accuracy of cervical cytology has been questioned due to high false negative rate. In order to improve the sensitivity of cytology it is prudent to analyze the factors which hamper with the diagnosis of high grade lesions. AIMS To study the cyto-histologic agreement in High grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) of uterine cervix and to analyze the smear characteristics ...
Aim: To find the clinical association of cervical cancer with pap smear test. Study Design: Prospective study Place and Duration Study: Department Obstetrics & Gynaecology, AJK Medical College Muzaffarbad Azad Kashmir from 1st January 2021 to 30th June 2022. Methodology: Five hundred women were screened who between 20-55 years age. Sampling was performed by ecto-cervix through wooden Ayre s...
We studied 3 patients with focal intra-anal tissue high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs). All had increased human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA and DNA in lesions compared with that in healthy mucosa. HIV-1 RNA and HIV-1 episomal DNA were indicative of ongoing viral replication, more so in anal HSILs.
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the accuracy of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) versus conventional Pap smear as a screening tool for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia/cancer among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected women. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 150 HIV-infected women attending the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital HIV clinic in Eldoret underwent conventi...
Objectives: The cellular immune system mediated by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and Natural killer (NK) cells are thought to play an important role in the ultimate decline of Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions (SILs). In this study, Natural killer and granzyme B (GranzB) positive T-cells were quantitatively evaluated in cervical tissuesamples obtained from women exhibiting invasive cancer (n= 5...
