We propose a test that can in principle detect any systematic errors in the Hipparcos parallaxes towards the Hyades cluster at the level of 0.3 mas. We show that the statistical parallax algorithm subsumes the classical moving cluster methods and provides more precise estimates of the distance and the first two moments of the velocity distribution of the Hyades cluster namely, its bulk space ve...

study of the spatial distribution of a pest and its natural enemies provides better decision tool for integrated pest management. the spatial distribution and seasonal activity of panonychus ulmi (koch) and its predator zetzellia mali (ewing) were studied in an apple orchard in khoramdareh (zanjan province, iran) during 2007. the interaction (density dependence) between the prey and its predato...

A semi-implicit orbit-averaged time-integration algorithm has been successfully implemented in a gyrokinetic particle simulation code for the study of self-consistent phenomena in a strongly magnetized plasma. The semi-implicit aspect of the integration scheme relaxes the timestep constraints required to insure numerical stability. The orbit averaging is useful in reducing statistical noise and...

The relationship between the statistical and geometric properties of particle motion in aperiodic, two-dimensional ows is examined. Finite-time invariant manifolds associated with transient hyperbolic trajectories are shown to divide the ow into distinct regions with similar statistical behavior. In particular, numerical simulations of simple, eddy resolving barotropic ows indicate that there e...

We use comparisons between the shapes of gravitational lens galaxies and models for their mass distributions to derive statistical constraints on the alignment of the mass distribution relative to the observed lens galaxy and on the strength of tidal shear perturbations. The mass distributions are aligned with the luminous galaxies, with a ∆θ 2 1/2 < 10 • upper limit on the dispersion in the an...

This article introduces a nested clustering technique and its application to the analysis of freeway operating condition. A clustering model is developed using the traffic data (flow, speed, occupancy) collected by the detectors and aggregated to 5-minute increments. An optimum fit of the statistical characteristics of the data set is provided by the model based on the Bayesian Information Crit...

A derivation of the Dirac equation in ‘3 + 1’ dimensions is presented based on a master equation approach originally developed for the ‘1+ 1’ problem by McKeon and Ord. The method of derivation presented here suggests a mechanism by which the work of Knuth and Bahrenyi on causal sets may be extended to a derivation of the Dirac equation in the context of an inference problem.

I. Introduction: Multivariate Statistical Analyses comprise a number of statistical methods/tools that may be applied to several fields of empirical investigations. Most of these methods have three characteristics in common: (i) they presume availability of data set, say Z(nxk) (in n observations and k variables; k ≥ 2, n>k), collected from the field (observationally or experimentally); (ii) th...
