A core-shell structured Fe3O4-MCM-41 nanocomposite was prepared by means of a surfactant-directed sol-gel process. Candida rugosa lipase was then bound to the magnetic core-shell material by using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking reagent. The as-prepared Fe3O4-MCM-41 support and the immobilized lipase were characterized in detail using enzyme activity assays, TEM, XRD, FTIR, VSM and nitrogen a...

To shed light on the role of suction in adhesion of microstructure with mushroom-shaped terminal elements, we compared pull-off forces measured at different retraction velocities on structured and smooth surfaces under different pressure conditions. The results obtained allow us to suggest that suction may contribute up to 10 per cent of the pull-off force measured on the structured surfaces at...

Databases comprise the foundation of most software systems. System developers inevitably write code to query these databases. The de facto language for querying is SQL and this, consequently, is the default language taught by higher education institutions. There is evidence that learners find it hard to master SQL, harder than mastering other programming languages such as Java. Educators do not...

In this study of catalytic microfluidic reactors we show that, when optimally structured, these reactors share underlying scaling properties. The scaling is predicted theoretically and verified numerically. Furthermore, we show how to increase the reaction rate significantly by distributing the active porous material within the reactor using a high-level implementation of topology optimization.

Material and Methods Using a structured questionnaire, a total of 89 conservationists from three different categories of conservation agencies: government, nongovernmental organizations, and intellectuals (academics and researchers), were asked about their views regarding the FSA in bringing conservation benefits and reducing the biodiversity threats. I used non-parametric tests for analyzing t...

A technique of computing the pressure drop and deposition rate evolution during soot loading and the 3D distribution of deposited soot particles for micro-structured ceramic filter media is presented. Methods developed at Fraunhofer ITWM for generating 3D computer models representing the microstructure of the filter material and for computing soot particle deposition in the microstructure model...

We discuss ways to explore how instructional material needs to be structured to be presented with various degrees of interactivity. We use the TRINDI 1 information state approach to model three different degrees of interactivity and present IMDiS, a small experimental implementation based on the GoDiS dialogue system.
