In this research, nanoimprint lithography (NIL) was used for patterning crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods on the silicon substrate. To fabricate nano-patterned ZnO nanorods, patterning of an n-octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on SiO2 substrate was prepared by the polymer mask using NI. The ZnO seed layer was selectively coated only on the hydrophilic SiO2 surf...

The behavior of a polyelectrolyte adsorbed on a charged substrate of high-dielectric constant is studied by both Monte-Carlo simulation and analytical methods. It is found that in a low enough ionic strength medium, the adsorption transition is first-order where the substrate surface charge still keeps repulsive. The monomer density at the adsorbed surface is identified as the order parameter. ...

We investigate the interaction of a carbon nanotube with a graphite substrate, using an interlayer potential that explicitly treats the registry dependence of the interaction. The carbon-carbon bond lengths in nanotubes differ slightly from those in flat graphite, so that the naively commensurate angular orientations for the tube with respect to the substrate lattice are destroyed. The interact...

We consider two stacked ultrathin layers of different liquids on a solid substrate. Using long-wave theory, we derive coupled evolution equations for the free liquid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces. Depending on the long-range van der Waals forces and the ratio of the layer thicknesses, the system follows different pathways of dewetting. The instability may be driven by varicose or zigzag mode...

First principles calculations, scanning tunneling microscopy, and Auger spectroscopy experiments of the adsorption of Mg on Ag(111) substrate are conducted. This detailed study reveals that an atomic scale controlled deposition of a metallic Mg monolayer perfectly wets the silver substrate without any alloy formation at the interface at room temperature. A liquid-like behavior of the Mg species...

A multilayered-substrate model is proposed for surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based measurement of the thickness of a water layer sandwiched between a lipid bilayer and an underlying support. To calculate sensitivity, a 473 nm-wavelength excitation source and a silver layer are used for the SPR sensor. It is theoretically shown that the multilayered substrate design achieves sufficient sensiti...

Direct observations using scanning transmission electron microscopy unveil an intriguing interfacial bi-layer that enables epitaxial growth of a strain-free, monoclinic, bronze-phase VO2(B) thin film on a perovskite SrTiO3 (STO) substrate. We observe an ultrathin (2-3 unit cells) interlayer best described as highly strained VO2(B) nanodomains combined with an extra (Ti,V)O2 layer on the TiO2 te...

Interdiffusion studies on high-T, superconducting YBasCu,O,_s thin films with thicknes~s in the range of 2000-3000 A, on a Si(ll1) substrate with a buffer layer have been performed. The buffer layer consists of a 400 A thick epitaxial Nisi, layer, covered with 1200 A of polycrystalline 210,. YBa,Cu,O,_s films were prepared using laser ablation. The YBa,Cu,O,_, films on the Si/NiSi,/ZrOs substra...

We have demonstrated that by coating with a thin dielectric layer of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), a biocompatible and optical transparent material in the visible range, the Ag nanoparticle-based substrate becomes extremely suitable for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Our measurements show that a 10 A or thicker ta-C layer becomes efficient to protect the oxygen-free Ag in ai...

This paper describes the initial design and implementation of a cross-layer communications substrate for tactical networks. Traditional crosslayer strategies for MANETs often rely on the direct interaction between neighbor layers in the communications stack. We propose a different approach, where all lower layers (PHY, MAC and NET) directly interact with the overlying applications (or communica...
