The transition between modulation instability gain and induced soliton fission in nonlinear fiber is experimentally investigated by coherent seeding with the two-color output of an optical parametric oscillator. This approach produces supercontinuum spectra displaying persistent, fine modulation from seeding-induced noise reduction. Numerical simulations support the findings.

We present an overview of the recent developments in nonlinear silicon photonics. There were significant advances in devices exploiting the ð2Þ and ð3Þ nonlinearities. Here, we discuss parametric amplification, wavelength conversion, supercontinuum generation, parametric oscillation, and frequency comb generation in siliconbased devices.

We employ an optical vortex beam for the generation of femtosecond supercontinuum in a solid state medium. We demonstrate that the continuum generation process is initiated by the filamentation of the vortex, resulting in a spatially divergent continuum. Despite the strong self-focusing and the formation of multiple hot-spots along the vortex ring, the singularity is preserved in both the near-...

In this paper we overview the concept of supercontinuum generation (SCG) and take a brief look at several mechanisms that are believed to give rise to this not yet fully understood phenomenon. We will emphasize why photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is a more desirable medium for observation of SCG and will conclude with a discussion of several emerging applications.

We report experiments and numerical simulations on supercontinuum generation with femtosecond Airy pulses in a highly nonlinear optical fiber. The ability of the Airy waveform to regenerate its dominant intensity peak results in the generation of distinct spectral features. Airy pulses and other self-healing temporal waveforms may be useful for the generation of spectra with desired properties.

Modulation instability of a continuous infrared wave leading to red-shifting solitons and blue-shifting dispersive waves and then subsequent soliton trapping is shown to enable the generation of blue solitary waves in optical fibers. The physical mechanism is described in the context of continuous wave supercontinuum generation leading to a spectrum which spans the visible and near infrared wit...

Supercontinuum based sources and measurement techniques are developed, enabling optical ultra-broadband studies of nano-scale photonic crystal devices and integrated photonic circuits over 1.2 – 2.0 μm wavelength range. Experiments involving 1-D periodic photonic crystal microcavity waveguides and 3-D periodic photonic crystals with embedded point defects are described. Experimental findings ar...

Sub-50fs transform limited pulses are produced in the 670-1050nm range by compressing sections of the ultrabroadband supercontinuum generated in a tapered fiber injected with pulses from a cavity dumped Ti:Sapphire laser. 2-Photon imaging of fluorescent beads is demonstrated. Biological and chemical applications are discussed.

A localized long-period fiber grating emerges in a silica optical fiber transmitting femtosecond pulse-induced supercontinuum. Simultaneously, a specific higher-order fiber cladding mode associated with the grating gains amplification at the expense of the fiber core mode. The grating has a period dependent on the dielectric structure of the fiber and is therefore classified as a self-organized...
