this thesis attempts to investigate the effects of prelistening activities on enhancing iranian efl learners` listening comprehension. the present study investigated ways in which learners` background knowledge could be activated in order to enhance their l2 listening comprehension by limiting the number of possible text interpretations prior to listening. the experiments conducted in this study examined the effect of prior knowledge and vocabulary teaching on iranian efl learners listening comprehension. the current study has two purposes: one is to investigate the effect of background knowledge on the second language listening comprehension of iranian intermediates and the other is to determine whether second language is facilitated by the introduction of unknown vocabularies in the form of prelistening activities. to conduct the study different instruments such as listening proficiency test and four listening tests such as pre and posttests were used and various statistical processes and techniques including paired-sample t-test, and analysis of variance (anova) were used. the findings of this study supported all three hypotheses tested. differences were found between the means of preteaching vocabulary variable, the background knowledge activation variable, and mean difference between these two strategies variable. subjects scored higher when the unknown words were taught in advance. likewise, subjects scored higher when they were asked some relevant questions about the topic than on those without them. there was, in addition, a significant difference between the means of preteaching vocabulary strategy and background knowledge activation strategy. in fact, preteaching vocabulary had a better effect in enhancing the students’ listening comprehension, in comparison to background knowledge activation strategy.

This experiment sought to examine the equivalence of online and paper and pencil testing methods as related to student performance in a computer technology course. Test score and completion time were the dependent variables that were used to assess students’ performance. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design. Test scores were not significantly different on the variables of pretest, age...

Let D be a statistical design consisting of v varieties on b blocks. We say it is binary if a variety occurs at most once on every block. For varieties p and q on blocks x and y respectively, we can obtain design D' from D by interchanging p and q (so p is on y and q is on x). We say that the exchange is binary if either x y, or p q, or: q not on x and p not on y. If D is binary then D' is also...

A project suitable for use as a first and last assignment given in an introductory experimental design course is outlined, and its implementation discussed. Phase 1 of the project is designed to be given at the beginning of a first course in experimental design and involves designing an experiment within instructor-specified parameters based initially on intuition and common sense. Phase 2, at ...

Experimental auctions are generally thought of as static markets. This paper presents the results of an experimental auction designed to test whether participants’ perceptions regarding the relative difficulty of delaying or reversing a transaction outside the experimental market systematically affect their willingness-to-pay bids. The results show that auction participants’ perceptions signifi...

While IT is generally found to augment productivity, recent evidence indicates that excessive and compulsive usage of IT is likely to have some adverse consequences. Given the prevalence of IT addiction, it becomes increasingly important to study this phenomenon. We seek to investigate the adverse effects of IT addiction, especially on productivity, in work settings. We propose a model showing ...

This paper argues that certain choice problems in transportation research can be best conceptualized as problems of portfolio choice. It discusses how portfolio choice problems can be studied using stated choice (conjoint) methods. Issues in the construction in the design of experiments, model specification and estimation are discussed. A working example illustrates the basic approach. Finally,...

People are using the Internet for financial planning assistance. Yet those seeking advice on the Internet rarely tend to question the advice source. Little research has examined the unique aspects of online financial advice taking. Online advice offers a unique setting which does not mirror “offline advice”. This paper addresses the research questions (1) What kinds of people are more likely to...
