Spirometric variables were obtained from nine symptomless subjects, who performed forced expiratory manoeuvres with three Vitalograph spirometers at three different ambient temperatures (36.5 degrees C, 24.1 degrees C, and - 7.3 degrees C) over three days according to a Latin square design. Analysis of variance showed no significant difference between values at different ambient temperatures wh...

QED is studied at low temperature (T ≪ m, where m is the electron mass) and zero chemical potential. By integrating out the electron field and the nonzero bosonic Matsubara modes, we construct an effective three-dimensional field theory that is valid at distances R ≫ 1/T . As applications, we reproduce the ring-improved free energy and calculate the Debye mass to order e.

N THE parasitic wasp Habrobracon juglandis (Ashm.), when a cross of I unrelated stocks is made, males (haploid) come from unfertilized eggs and females (diploid) from fertilized eggs. When the parental stocks are closely related, not only males from unfertilized eggs but also males (diploid) from fertilized eggs appear. That such biparental males should be produced was puzzling until WHITING br...

Day old Drosophila pupae were subjected to a variety of closely controlled temperature shocks. Twenty-five hours after puparium formation (at 23 degrees ), temperatures from 39.5-41.5 degrees (Q(1) = 2.3) differentially disturb the formation of the posterior crossvein. Three other separate treatments disturb posterior crossvein formation: treatments in the range 36.0-37.0 degrees at 25 hours; 3...

Maternal effects could influence the persistence of species under environmental change, but the adaptive significance of many empirically estimated maternal effects remains unclear. Inferences about the adaptive significance of maternal effects depend on the correlation between maternal and offspring environments, the relative importance of frequency- or density-dependent selection and whether ...

Geometric phase of an open quantum system that is interacting with a thermal environment (bath) is studied through some simple examples. The system is considered to be a simple spin-half particle which is weakly coupled to the bath. It is seen that even in this regime the geometric phase can vary with temperature. In addition, we also consider the system under an adiabatically time-varying magn...

Six cases of multiple sclerosis are reported in which cold produced a temporary exacerbation of symptoms and signs of the disease. Also, in one case investigated in detail by psychophysical methods, heating produced a paradoxical deterioration in vision and simultaneous improvement in sensory and motor function. The effect of temperature in multiple sclerosis is discussed and a physiological ex...

The study of ultracold trapped fermionic gases is a rapidly exploding subject [1-10] which is defining new directions in condensed matter and atomic physics. It has also captured the attention of physicists who study color superconducting quark matter as well as nuclear matter [11-13]. Indeed, it is hard, in recent times, to find a subfield of physics which appeals this broadly to the research ...

The activities of acetylcholinesterase (ACHE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) in rat brain capillaries were measured as a function of temperature. Arrhenius plots of the data revealed that AChE exhibits a biphasic Arrhenius plot with a distinct break (transition temperature) at about 15.2 kcal/mol. In contrast, BuChE did not show evidence of discontinuity. BuChE showed an activation energy hi...
