In this paper, we characterise the adsorption of ethylene, propanol and hexanal molecules on crystalline ice by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations performed at 236?K, a temperature which is ty...

Electron microscope studies of adul t animal lenses have revealed the presence of a cytoplasmic substance in the form of filamentous and possibly spherical s t ructures (1). I t has been designated as low densi ty mater ial with reference to its opacity to the electron beam. Since this system bore no resemblance to any cytoplasmic elements previously described in other tissues, an identificatio...

A continuous drive to shrink device packages and printed circuit board (PCB) design, so that higher, and better, functionality can be p rovided to the user in an ever smaller footprint, demands the increasing use o f micro -vias onboard. Micro-vi a diam eters o f 200 microns, 100 microns and below are now common. With such small features, the quality of thei r through-hole pl ating during manuf...

T h e question of invertibil i ty of a dynamical system-i .e . , when does the output sequence (function) uniquely determine the input sequence ( funct ion)--has received a good deal of attention in the literature and has applications to problems in coding theory and functional controllabili ty (the dual of invertibility). Massey and Sain (1968), Sain and Massey (1969), Brockett and Mesarovic (...

Transposable elements in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae are a heterogeneous group of mobile genetic elements. Ty elements transpose via an intermediate RNA-molecule using the same replication and integration mechanisms as the metazoan retroviruses. Ty1 is a retrotransposons with life cycle very similar to that of oncogenes. This similarity provides an attractive model for virus-host interac...

Recent evidence highlights that the cancer cell energy requirements vary greatly from normal cells and that cancer cells exhibit different metabolic phenotypes with variable participation of both glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation. NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Complex I) is the largest complex of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and contributes about 40% of the proton motive ...

The dinuclear copper enzyme tyrosinase (Ty) from genetically engineered Streptomyces antibioticus has been investigated in its paramagnetic half-met form [Cu(I)-Cu(II)]. The cw EPR, pulsed EPR, and hyperfine sublevel correlation spectroscopy (HYSCORE) experiments on the half-met-Ty and on its complexes with three different types of competitive inhibitor are reported. The first type includes p-n...

Ty elements are high copy number, dispersed repeated sequences in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome known to mediate gross chromosomal rearrangements (GCRs). Here we found that introduction of Ty912, a previously identified Ty1 element, onto the non-essential terminal region of the left arm of chromosome V led to a 380-fold increase in the rate of accumulating GCRs in a wild-type strain. A su...

Forty-one food additives and 20 chemotherapeutic agents were examined for their ability to induce primary lung tumors in A mice. The animals received i.p. injections of each compound for 8 weeks and were killed at 24 weeks after the first injection. With some of the more toxic compounds, fewer injections were administered. Two or three dose levels were used for each chemical. Cinnamyl anthranil...

A reassortant, TyRh, was isolated after coinfection of MA104 cells with avian Ty-1 and simian RRV rotaviruses. Hybridization and serological studies showed that the reassortant's 4th gene, which encodes Vp4, was derived from the simian RRV rotavirus parent, whereas the remaining 10 genes were derived from the avian Ty-1 rotavirus parent.
