Marine pufferfish generally involve a potent neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX), which might be the leading cause for many human intoxications. It blocks nervous impulses’ conduction along nerve fibers and axons during act, LD50 mouse is 10 nanograms. Being much larger than sodium ion, TTX acts as cork of bottle, prevents from flowing until it diffuses slowly. The expanse appears to species-specifi...

Experiments were undertaken to verify the existence of fast sodium channels in the adrenal chromaffin cell membrane and to assess their contribution to the physiological release of catecholamines. We have used veratridine to activate sodium channels. Veratridine causes secretion of catecholamines from perfused cat adrenal gland. Secretory response to veratridine is calcium dependent and abolish...

Four neurotoxins that activate the action potential Na+ ionophore of electrically excitable neuroblastoma cells interact with two distinct classes of sites, one specific for the alkaloids veratridine, batrachotoxin, and aconitine, and the second specific for scorpion toxin. Positive heterotropic cooperativity is observed between toxins bound at these two classes of sites. Tetrodotoxin is a nonc...

Homeostatic scaling allows neurons to alter synaptic transmission to compensate for changes in network activity. Here, we show that suppression of network activity with tetrodotoxin, which increases surface expression of AMPA receptors (AMPARs), dramatically reduces levels of the deSUMOylating (where SUMO is small ubiquitin-like modifier) enzyme SENP1, leading to a consequent increase in protei...
