It is shown that the absence of call spread, butterfly spread and calendar spread arbitrages is sufficient to exclude all static arbitrages from a set of option price quotes across strikes and maturities on a single underlier. 2005 Elsevier Inc. Approximate Incremental Value-at-Risk formulae provide an easy-to-use preliminary guideline for risk allocation. Both the cases of risk adding and risk pooling are examined and beta-based formulae achieved. Results highlight how much the conditions for adding new risky positions are stronger than those required for risk pooling. JEL classification: C13; D81; G11; G12.
This paper develops a tractable dynamic term structure models under jump-diffusion and regime shifts with time varying transition probabilities. The model allows for regime-dependent jumps while both jump risk and regime-switching risk are priced. Closed form solution for the term structure is obtained for an affine-type model under loglinear approximation. JEL Classification: G12, E43, E52
We analyze the implications of the widely used fixed fraction of funds fees on a mutual fund manager’s portfolio decisions. In our model, a log utility investor is allowed to dynamically allocate capital between an actively managed mutual fund and a locally riskless bond. The optimal fund portfolio is shown to be the one that maximizes the market value of the fees received, and is independent o...
One of the most striking portfolio puzzles is the “disposition effect”: the tendency of individuals to sell stocks in their portfolios that have risen in value since purchase, rather than fallen in value. Perhaps the most prominent explanation for this puzzle is based on prospect theory. Despite its prominence, this explanation has received little formal scrutiny. We take up this task, and anal...

We focus our attention on a sample of publicly traded firms that have become the target of an IPO-related securities class action lawsuit filed under Section 11 of the 1933 Securities Act between January 1991 and December 2006 and a mat...
We analyze trading opportunities that arise from differences between the bond and the CDS market. By simultaneously entering a position in a CDS contract and the underlying bond, traders can build a default-risk free position that allows them to repeatedly earn the difference between the bond asset swap spread and the CDS, known as the basis. We show that the basis size is closely related to me...
Rational herd behavior and informationally efficient security prices have long been considered to be mutually exclusive but for exceptional cases. In this paper we describe conditions on the underlying information structure that are necessary and sufficient for informational herding. Employing a standard sequential security trading model, we argue that people may be subject to herding if and on...
The last decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in both the number and the market share of screen-based trading systems. Electronic trading systems do offer lower operating costs and the possibility of remote access to the market. On the other hand, arguments based on the anonymity of electronic trading systems suggest that adverse selection may be a more severe problem and that, therefore, b...
