A simple modification to a Sandercock-type tandem Fabry-Pérot interferometer is demonstrated. By adding an independent reference laser with temperature tunability, narrow Brillouin lines that are tens GHz shifted from the Rayleigh line can be recorded with much higher frequency resolution than in the original system.
The recent oil and gas production boom in the contiguous United States generated tens of billions in additional royalty income for owners of oil and gas rights. We use the royalty income shock to study the local multiplier effect of unanticipated income and find that each royalty dollar received by county residents created an additional $0.50 in local income, mostly through greater wage income....
In this Letter, we theoretically propose for the first time that graphene monolayers can be used for superscatterer designs. We show that the scattering cross-section of the bare deep-subwavelength dielectric cylinder is markedly enhanced by six orders of magnitude due to the excitation of the first-order resonance of graphene plamons. By utilizing the tunability of the plasmonic resonance thro...
College football season is one of the most popular and anticipated sports competitions in the United States. Many of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I-A football games are surrounded by enormous fan interest and receive extensive media coverage. They are attended by tens of thousands of spectators and are followed by millions through the media. As a result, success ...
Femtosecond electron bunches with ultrarelativistic energies were recently generated by laser wakefield accelerators. Here we predict that laser wakefield acceleration can generate even attosecond bunches, due to a strong chirp of the betatron frequency. We show how the bunch duration scales with the acceleration parameters and that, after acceleration, the bunches can propagate over many tens ...
We demonstrate the feasibility of optical bistability in an axially modulated nonlinear OmniGuide fiber through analytical theory and detailed numerical experiments. At 1.55-microm carrier wavelength, the in-fiber devices that we propose can operate with only a few tens of milliwatts of power, can have a nearly instantaneous response and recovery time, and can be shorter than 100 microm.
Over the last decade electrical batteries have emerged as a critical bottleneck for portable electronics development. High-power mechanical energy harvesting can potentially provide a valuable alternative to the use of batteries, but, until now, a suitable mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion technology did not exist. Here we describe a novel mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion met...
The interaction with light weakens the superconducting ground state in classical superconductors. The situation in cuprate superconductors is more complicated: illumination increases the charge carrier density, a photo-induced effect that persists below room temperature. Furthermore, systematic investigations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O(6+x) (YBCO) have shown an enhanced critical temperature Tc. Unt...
Theoretical predictions for biodiversity patterns are typically derived under the assumption that ecological systems have reached a dynamic equilibrium. Yet, there is increasing evidence that various aspects of ecological systems, including (but not limited to) species richness, are not at equilibrium. Here, we use simulations to analyse how biodiversity patterns unfold through time. In particu...
