We report on the characteristics of enhanced and balanced white-light emission from bi-directional organic light-emitting diodes (BiOLEDs) enabled by the introduction of micro-cavity effects. The insertion of an additional metal layer between the indium tin oxide anode and the hole transporting layer results in similar light output of our BiOLEDs in both top and bottom direction and in reduced ...

Sub-oxide-to-metallic highly-crystalline nanowires with uniformly distributed nanopores in the 3 nm range have been synthesized by a unique combination of the plasma oxidation, re-deposition and electron-beam reduction. Electron beam exposure-controlled oxide → sub-oxide → metal transition is explained using a non-equilibrium model.

Despite great technological interest in nanostructured zinc oxide (ZnO) for a large variety of applications, such as lightemitting diodes, gas sensors, or dye-sensitized solar cells, their investigation as lithium-ion anode materials has been reported rather scarcely to date. In fact, although a theoretical specific capacity of about 988 mAhg@1 (if the reaction ZnO+ 3Li+3e$LiZn+Li2O is consider...

Highly efficient energy storage is in high demand for next-generation clean energy applications. As a promising energy storage material, the application of Mn2O3 is limited due to its poor electrical conductivity. Here, high-pressure techniques enhanced the electrical conductivity of Mn2O3 significantly. In situ synchrotron micro X-Ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and resistivity measurement...

A method for producing nanocomposites of transition metal oxides A(3)O(4) (where A represents Mn, Fe or Co) and graphene nanosheets (GNS) is presented. The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the formation of A(3)O(4) nanoparticles (NPs) were carried out simultaneously during the reaction. The electrochemical properties of A(3)O(4)-GNS nanocomposites as electrode materials for supercapacitors ...

Considerable efforts have been devoted to extending the range of the elemental composition of mesoporous materials since the pioneering work of the M41S family of ordered mesoporous silica by Mobil researchers. The synthesis of transition metal-containing mesostructured materials with large surface area and high porosity has drawn great attention for its potential applications in acid and redox...

Metal sulphides, and in particular transition metal sulphide colloids, are a broad, versatile and exciting class of inorganic compounds which deserve growing interest and attention ascribable to the functional properties that many of them display. With respect to their oxide homologues, however, they are characterised by noticeably different chemical, structural and hence functional features. T...

Transition metal dichalcogenide materials have been considered as promising anode materials for rechargeable sodium-ion batteries because of their high specific capacity and low cost. Here, we demonstrate an iron sulfide Fe3S4 as a new anode material for a rechargeable sodium-ion battery. The involved conversion mechanism has been proved when the as-prepared Fe3S4 was used as the host material ...

Hybrid direct carbon/coal fuel cells (HDCFCs) utilise an anode based upon a molten carbonate salt with an oxide conducting solid electrolyte for direct carbon/coal conversion. They can be fuelled by a wide range of carbon sources, and offer higher potential chemical to electrical energy conversion efficiency and have the potential to decrease CO2 emissions compared to coal-fired power plants. I...
