By means of high-resolution ultrasonic velocity measurements, as a function of temperature and magnetic field, the nature of the different low temperatures magnetic phase transitions observed for the quasi-one-dimensional compound CsNiCl3 is established. Special attention has been devoted to the field-induced 120 degrees phase transition above the multicritical point in the H-T phase diagram wh...

We study the force-induced unfolding of random disordered RNA or single-stranded DNA polymers. The system undergoes a second-order phase transition from a collapsed globular phase at low forces to an extensive necklace phase with a macroscopic end-to-end distance at high forces. At low temperatures, the sequence inhomogeneities modify the critical behaviour. We provide numerical evidence for th...

We consider the classical XY model (O(2) nonlinear σ-model) on a class of lattices with the (fractal) dimensions 1 < D < 2. The Berezinskii’s harmonic approximation suggests that the model undergoes a phase transition in which the low temperature phase is characterized by stretched exponential decay of correlations. We prove an exponentially decaying upper bound for the two-point correlation fu...

Thermal expansion and magnetostriction, the strain responses of a material to temperature and a magnetic field, especially properties at low temperature, are extremely useful to study electronic and phononic properties, phase transitions, quantum criticality, and other interesting phenomena in cryogenic engineering and materials science. However, traditional dilatometers cannot provide magnetic...

Tungsten filaments used as sources of electrons in a low-temperature liquid or gaseous helium environment have remarkable properties of operating at thousands of degrees kelvin in surroundings at temperatures of order 1 K. We provide an explanation of this performance in terms of important changes in the thermal transport mechanisms. The behavior can be cast as a first-order phase transition.

For filling factors nu in the range between 4.16 and 4.28, we simultaneously detect two resonances in the real diagonal microwave conductivity of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at low temperature T approximately 35 mK. We attribute the resonance to Wigner-crystal and Bubble phases of the 2DES in higher Landau Levels. For nu below and above this range, only single resonances are observ...

We have studied the compressible antiferromagnetic Ising Model on a triangular lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that the coupling to the strain removes the frustration of the rigid model and the simulations show a transition from the disordered to an ordered, striped phase at low temperatures. This transition involves two broken symmetries: the Ising symmetry and a three-state...

2014 The heat capacity of biphenyl has been measured between 10 and 50 K. Although no specific heat anomalies could be seen at 15 or 40 K, where phase transitions are known to exist, the results are not inconsistent with a transition enthalpy smaller than 10 J.K-1. mol-1 at 40 K. At this temperature, the thermal equilibrium times changed abruptly. J. I’lij,si(lue LETTRES 41 (1980) L-83 L-85 15 ...

We show how to model the transition between distinct quantum Hall plateaus in terms of D-branes in string theory. A low energy theory of 2 + 1 dimensional fermions is obtained by considering the D3-D7 system, and the plateau transition corresponds to moving the branes through one another. We study the transition at strong coupling using gauge/gravity duality and the probe approximation. Strong ...

The Shastry-Sutherland lattice, one of the simplest systems with geometrical frustration, which has an exact eigenstate by putting singlets on diagonal bonds, can be realized in a group of layered compounds and raises both theoretical and experimental interest. Most of the previous studies on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice are focusing on the Heisenberg model. Here we opt for the Hubbard model ...
