The in vitro activity of uperin 3.6, alone or combined with six antibiotics, against gram-positive cocci, including Rhodococcus equi, methicillin-resistant staphylococci, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci, was investigated. All isolates were inhibited at concentrations of 1 to 16 mg/liter. Synergy was demonstrated when uperin 3.6 was combined with clarithromycin and doxycycline.

Enterococcus faecalis G1-0247 (vancomycin MIC, 16 microg/ml) was found to harbor a vanG operon 99% identical to the vanG operon in E. faecalis BM4518. Enterococcus faecium strain 10/96A (VanD4) was the first vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) isolated in Brazil. Subsequent Brazilian VRE strains have all had the VanA phenotype. Multilocus sequence typing showed that strain 10/96A was isolated sporadically, has a unique sequence type (ST 281), and was not the progenitor of the VRE strains isolated from hospital outbreaks in Brazil.
