Repetitive DNA motifs with potential variable-number tandem repeats (VNTR) were identified in the genome of Neisseria meningitidis and used to develop a typing method. A total of 146 meningococcal isolates recovered from carriers and patients were studied. These included 82 of the 107 N. meningitidis isolates previously used in the development of multilocus sequence typing (MLST), 45 isolates r...

Variable-number tandem repeats (VNTRs) have been identified in populations of Pasteuria ramosa, a castrating endobacterium of Daphnia species. The allelic polymorphisms at 14 loci in laboratory and geographically diverse soil samples showed that VNTRs may serve as biomarkers for the genetic characterization of P. ramosa isolates.

To identify strains of Mycobacterium bovis circulating in Iran, we used region of difference, spoligotypes, and variable number tandem repeats to genotype 132 M. bovis isolates from Holstein Friesian cattle. Despite wide geographic origins, the strains were genetically homogeneous. Increased distribution of cattle herds and inadequate control measures may have contributed to strain dispersion.

Thirty-four thalassemia patients were studied for chimerism by fluorescent in situ hybridization or variable number tandem repeats after bone marrow transplantation. Mixed chimerism was detected in 9 patients with host cells ranging from 4 to 56%. One had graft rejection and the others were transfusion independent. Mixed chimerism was common but mostly without deleterious effect.

VNTRs regions have been successfully used for bacterial subtyping; however, the hypervariability in VNTR loci is problematic when trying to predict the relationships among isolates. Since few studies have examined the mutation rate of these markers, our aim was to estimate mutation rates of VNTRs specific for verotoxigenic E. coli O157:H7. The knowledge of VNTR mutational rates and the factors ...

We report a case of chest wall abscess caused by Mycobacterium bovis BCG that arose as a complication 1 year after intravesical BCG instillation. We identified M. bovis BCG Tokyo 172 in the abscess by PCR-based typing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and analysis of variable number of tandem repeats data.

Frequency of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis in Pakistan increased from 1.5% in 2006 to 4.5% in 2009 (p<0.01). To understand the epidemiology, we genotyped selected strains by using spoligotyping, mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units-variable number of tandem repeats, and IS6110 restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis.

In a previous study we isolated a partial cDNA with a tandem repeat of 48 bp, which allowed us to map a novel human mucin gene named MUC4 to chromosome 3q29. Here we report the organization and sequence of the 5'-region and its junction with the tandem repeat array of MUC4. Analysis of three overlapping genomic clones allowed us to obtain a partial restriction map of MUC4 and to locate the comp...

Clinical and environmental Vibrio cholerae organisms collected from February 2004 through April 2005 were systematically isolated from 2 rural Bangladeshi locales. Their genetic relatedness was evaluated at 5 loci that contained a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR). The observed minimal overlap in VNTR patterns between the 2 communities was consistent with sequential, small outbreaks from...

Many new classes of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) -based genetic markers have been developed over the last decade. Of these, microsatellite markers are widely regarded as one of the most useful identifi ed so far1,2,3. The signifi cance of microsatellite markers derives from their abundance in the genome, single locus nature, simplicity of assay, high levels of allelic diversity, mendelian in...
