AIM To test the hypothesis that phenotypic diversity in isolated human populations is decreased in comparison with general outbred population because of reduced genetic and environmental diversity. To demonstrate this in populations for which reduced genetic and environmental diversity had already been established, by studying the amount of variation in plasma lipid levels. METHODS Fasting pl...

Convergence rates and central limit theorems for kernel estimators of the stationary density of a linear process have been obtained under the assumption that the innovation density is smooth (Lipschitz). We show that smoothness is not required. For example, it suffices that the innovation density has bounded variation.

PURPOSE A magnetic resonance imaging method is presented that allows for the simultaneous assessment of oxygen delivery, oxygen uptake, and parenchymal density. The technique is applied to a mouse model of porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) induced lung emphysema in order to investigate how structural changes affect lung function. METHOD Nine-week-old female C57BL6 mice were instilled with sal...

UNLABELLED Although it is known that structural and functional changes in the pulmonary vasculature and parenchyma occur in the progress of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), information is limited on early regional perfusion (Q(r)) alterations. METHODS We studied 6 patients with mild or moderate COPD and 9 healthy subjects (6 young and 3 age-matched). The PET (13)NN-labeled saline...

This study was carried out to investigate the role of soil structure in splash erosion in semi-arid soils. Splash erosion was measured in four soil textures (silty clay loam, sandy clay loam, silt loam and sandy loam) with two soil structure conditions (with natural structure and under aggregate breakdown) using a simulated rainfall with 50 mmh-1 in intensity for 30 min in splash caps with 10-c...

Genome-wide association studies have provided evidence that common variation at 5p15.33 (TERT-CLPTM1L), 6p21.33 and 15q25.1 (CHRNA5-CHRNA3) influences lung cancer risk. To examine if variation at any of these loci influences the risk of lung cancer in never-smokers, we compared 5p15.33-TERT (rs2736100), 5p15.33-CLPTM1L (rs4975616), 6p21.33-BAT3 (rs3117582), 15q25.1-CHRNA3 (rs8042374) and 15q25....

The morphological specifications play a substantial role in classification and breeding programs of various plant taxa. In the current study, some macro- and micro-morphological features of Salvia nemorosa, Salvia syriaca, Salvia frigida and Salvia virgata (three accessions), were investigated using scanning electron microscopy and image analysis program. The completely randomized design (CRD) ...

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer- related death in the world today. Since the effective management of drug resistant lung cancer, and particularly non-small cell lung carcinomas is a major problem, attempts need to be made to identify new potential anticancer drugs that can kill non-small cell lung cancer cells efficiently. In the present study, a human non-small cell lung carcinoma N...

Creation of bioartificial organs has been enhanced by the development of strategies involving decellularized mammalian lung. Because fibroblasts critically support lung function through a number of mechanisms, study of these cells in the context of the decellularized lung has the potential to improve the structure and function of tissue-engineered lungs. We characterized the engraftment and sur...
