We are conducting a study of the effects of porosity on shock wave propagation and attenuation in geologic materials. We present data on shock wave propagation in porous ice under conditions applicable to mutual collisions in the outer solar system. We observe rarefaction waves from small regions of increased porosity and calculate release wave velocities.

BACKGROUND Salt marshes lie between many human communities and the coast and have been presumed to protect these communities from coastal hazards by providing important ecosystem services. However, previous characterizations of these ecosystem services have typically been based on a small number of historical studies, and the consistency and extent to which marshes provide these services has no...

The mechanical properties of any substance are essential facts to understand its behaviour and make the maximum use of the particular substance. Rocks are indeed an important substance, as they are of significant use in the energy industry, specifically for fossil fuels and geothermal energy. Attenuation of seismic waves is a non-destructive technique to investigate mechanical properties of res...

A method for measuring in situ compressional wave attenuation exploiting the spectral decay of reflection coefficient Bragg resonances is applied to fine-grained sediments New England Mud Patch. Measurements layer-averaged a 10.3 m mud layer yield 0.04 {0.03, 0.055} dB/m/kHz (braces indicate outer bounds); twice as large at site with 3.2 thickness. It shown that both results are heavily influen...

Nature-based solutions (NbS) for coastal protection has recently gained increased attention worldwide as a sustainable, economical and eco-friendly alternative to conventional grey structures, particularly under the threat of climate change (Temmerman et al. 2013). Wave energy dissipation by vegetation can be parameterized total horizontal force acting on plant; expressed using Morison-type equ...
