Writing adaptive applications is complex and thus errorprone. Our self-adaptive migratable Web services (SAM-WSs) already provide adaptation support in terms of location, available state, provided functionality and implementation in use. Yet, SAM-WSs still require developers implementing the adaptation logic themselves. In this work, we present an approach to ease the implementation of adaptive...

INTRODUCTION Wall shear stress (WSS) and oscillatory shear index (OSI) are associated with atherosclerotic disease. Both parameters are derived from blood velocities, which can be measured with phase-contrast MRI (PC-MRI). Limitations in spatiotemporal resolution of PC-MRI are known to affect these measurements. Our aim was to investigate the effect of spatiotemporal resolution using a carotid ...

Atherosclerotic lesions have a patchy distribution within arteries that suggests a controlling influence of haemodynamic stresses on their development. The distribution near aortic branches varies with age and species, perhaps reflecting differences in these stresses. Our previous work, which assumed steady flow, revealed a dependence of wall shear stress (WSS) patterns on Reynolds number and s...

Allometric scaling laws relate structure or function between species of vastly different sizes. They have rarely been derived for hemodynamic parameters known to affect the cardiovascular system, e.g., wall shear stress (WSS). This work describes noninvasive methods to quantify and determine a scaling law for WSS. Geometry and blood flow velocities in the infrarenal aorta of mice and rats under...

PURPOSE The goal of this work was to determine wall shear stress (WSS) patterns in the human abdominal aorta and to compare these patterns to measurements of intimal thickness (IT) from autopsy samples. METHODS The WSS was experimentally measured using the laser photochromic dye tracer technique in an anatomically faithful in vitro model based on CT scans of the abdominal aorta in a healthy 3...

Achieving high dependability of Web Services (WSs) dynamically composed from component WSs is an open problem. One of the main difficulties here is due to the fact that the component WSs can and will be upgraded online, which will affect the dependability of the composite WS. The paper introduces the problem of component WS upgrade and proposes solutions for dependable upgrading in which natura...

Dear Editor, Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is an established revascularisation treatment for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the graft patency rate varies significantly among different bypass graft conduits. Ten years after CABG, more than 90% of the left internal mammary artery (LIMA) grafts are patent1 but the patency rate of saphenous vein grafts (SVGs) ranges ...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Evolution of intracranial aneurysmal disease is known to be related to hemodynamic forces acting on the vessel wall. Low wall shear stress (WSS) has been reported to have a negative effect on endothelial cells normal physiology and may be an important contributor to local remodeling of the arterial wall and to aneurysm growth and rupture. METHODS Seven patient-specific ...

The association of hemodynamics with cognitive impairment and white matter lesions (WMLs) has come to the foreground in recent years. Six hundred eighty-nine elderly participants aged ≥60 years were eligible enrolled. After an average of 5.4 years follow-up, there was a significant decline in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores and increases in total white matter hyperintensities (WMH),...

In the present paper, we obtain a result on the rate-distortion function (RDF) of wide sense stationary (WSS) vector processes that allows us to reduce the complexity of coding those processes. To achieve this result, we propose a sequence of block circulant matrices. In addition, we use the proposed sequence to reduce the complexity of filtering WSS vector processes.
