The local T-cell response to bacterial antigens is involved in the pathogenesis of reactive arthritis (ReA). Here, we have identified a 19-kDa antigen of Yersinia enterocolitica O:9 recognized by Yersinia-specific synovial fluid CD4+ T cells in two patients with Yersinia-induced ReA. N-terminal amino acid sequencing of this protein revealed that it was identical to the 19-kDa urease beta subuni...

Yersinia enterocolitica is a food-borne pathogen that preferentially infects the Peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes, causing an acute inflammatory reaction. Even though Y. enterocolitica induces a robust inflammatory response during infection, the bacterium has evolved a number of virulence factors to limit the extent of this response. We previously demonstrated that interleukin-1α (IL-...

Thirty-three clinical isolates of the highly pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica bioserotype 1B/O8 were collected from sporadic cases in Poland from January 2004 to July 2008. The isolates carried major virulence markers and were strongly clonal. This is the first report of the emergence and dissemination of highly related clones of Y. enterocolitica 1B/O8 in Europe.

Yersinia enterocolitica infection rarely can cause extra-intestinal infections. We present a case of septic arthritis of the shoulder due to this organism in an elderly man with liver and cardiac disease. We review previously published cases of Y. enterocolitica septic arthritis, and discuss risk factors and management.

A cloned fragment of Yersinia enterocolitica DNA complemented the defect in ferrioxamine B uptake of an Escherichia coli fhuE mutant lacking the outer membrane high-affinity transport protein FhuE. Subcloning revealed that a 13.7-kDa outer membrane protein was required for complementation. The amino acid sequence deduced from the nucleotide sequence showed extensive homology to PCPHi, an outer ...

Thirty-one strains of Yersinia enterocolitica were isolated from food and surface water. During the period of January 1975 to June 1977, 157 strains from 143 human cases were also isolated. Among the different serotypes from nonhuman sources, serotypes 6,30 and 4,32 were the most common. Serotype 4,32 was present only in food and not in water. Serotype 3 was isolated only from humans. Among the...

This study describes the draft genome sequences of four Yersinia enterocolitica strains, originally isolated from ungulate carcasses. These isolates were typed biochemically and two were determined to be highly virulent (biotype 1B). The draft genome sequences had a mean size of 4.77 Mb and a mean G+C content of 47.1%.

Extracellular Yersinia disables the immune system of its host by injecting effector Yop proteins into host cells. We show that a Yersinia enterocolitica nonpolar lcrG mutant is severely impaired in the translocation of YopE, YopH, YopM, YpkA/YopO, and YopP into eukaryotic cells. LcrG is thus required for efficient internalization of all the known Yop effectors.

In this case-control study of Yersinia enterocolitica infections among black infants, chitterling preparation was significantly associated with illness (p<0.001). Of 13 samples of chitterlings tested, 2 were positive for Yersinia intermedia and 5 for Salmonella. Decontamination of chitterlings before sale with methods such as irradiation should be strongly considered.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a human pathogen that causes gastroenteric infections. Various environmental signals control the expression of the virulence factors in pathogenic Y. enterocolitica strains. OmpR, a global transcriptional regulator controls the expression of a wide spectrum of genes, some of which are required for virulence. In this study, we amplified, cloned and sequenced a Y. enter...
