Two-spin correlations generated by interactions which decay with distance r as r−1−σ with −1 < σ < 0 are calculated for periodic Ising chains of length L. Mean-field theory indicates that the correlations, C(r, L), diminish in the thermodynamic limit L → ∞, but they contain a singular structure for r/L → 0 which can be observed by introducing magnified correlations, LC(r, L)−∑r C(r, L). The mag...
Finite–size scaling properties and Casimir forces in an exactly solvable quantum statistical–mechanical model Abstract A d–dimensional finite quantum model system confined to a general hypercubical geometry with linear spatial size L and " temporal size " 1/T (T-temperature of the system) is considered in the spherical approximation under periodic boundary conditions. Because of its close relat...
Abstract We search for the strange pentaquark Θ+ using kaon interactions in the material of the Belle detector. No signal is observed in the pKS final state, while in the pK − final state we observe ∼ 1.6 · 104 Λ(1520) → pK decays. We set an upper limit on the ratio of Θ+ to Λ(1520) yields σ(Θ+)/σ(Λ(1520)) < 2% at 90% CL, assuming that the Θ+ is narrow. We also report on searches for strange an...
The unusual stability of bis- and tris-peroxides contradicts the conventional wisdom - some of them can melt without decomposition at temperatures exceeding 100 °C. In this work, we disclose a stabilizing stereoelectronic effect that two peroxide groups can exert on each other. This stabilization originates from strong anomeric nO → σ*CO interactions that are absent in mono-peroxides but reintr...
We briefly review some basic aspects of transport in clean metals focusing on the role of electron-electron interactions and neglecting the effects of impurities, phonons and interband transitions. Both for small Fermi surfaces of two and three-dimensional metals and open Fermi surfaces of quasi one-dimensional metals the dc conductivity σ is largely dominated by momentum and pseudo-momentum co...
We analyzed the results for finite nuclei and infinite nuclear and neutron matter using the standard σ−ω model and with the effective field theory. For the first time, we have shown here quantitatively that the inclusion of self-interaction of the vector mesons and the cross-interaction of all the mesons taken in the theory explain naturally the experimentally observed softness of equation of s...
The riddle of the σ is recast in a way that tries to differentiate fact from fiction as a basis for future/further discussion. By doing this, it is hoped that the role of the σ as dominating the ubitiquitous ππ interactions below 1 GeV and its relation to the QCD vacuum can be clarified. In this talk, I will start to answer some of the questions that Lucien Montanet listed in his introduction a...
