Submicron-sized Au particles and Au/SiO(2) nanocomposites (superparticles) as large as 670 nm have been introduced into tsA201 cells with minimal cell trauma by cationic transfection systems. Successful implantations can be characterized by the expression of co-transfected DNA.

We characterized 670 Clostridium difficile isolates collected from patients in 84 hospitals in Germany in 2008. PCR ribotyping showed high prevalence of ribotype 001 and restricted dissemination of ribotype 027 strains. Fluoroquinolone resistance and associated gyrase mutations were frequent in various ribotypes, but no resistance to metronidazole or vancomycin was noted.

The degrees of competence of opaque and transparent colony variants of Streptococcus pneumoniae were compared. The transparent variants were transformed at 9- to 670-fold-higher rates than the opaque variants, independent of the DNA incorporated, due to decreased expression of capsular polysaccharide. Genetic transformation, therefore, tends to select for a less-encapsulated subpopulation.

We are developing a 95 GHz, 200 W, wideband vacuum electronic amplifier based on a 20 kV, 120 mA electron beam. The serpentine circuit is fabricated by multilayer UV-LIGA using an embedded polymer monofilament, which produces an all-copper monolithic structure with beam tunnel. We also discuss extension of the technique to upper millimeter-wave circuits at 670 GHz.

We demonstrated a 670 mW continuous-wave single-frequency laser source at 780 nm by using external-cavity-enhanced second-harmonic generation of a seeded fiber amplifier in periodically poled lithium niobate. A maximum second-harmonic conversion efficiency of 58% was achieved. The source can work stably over 1 h by locking the frequency-doubling cavity, while the power stability is less than 2%.

We report a novel near-infrared fluorescent calcium probe (KFCA), which has good optical properties such as intense NIR fluorescence emission (670 nm, QY: 0.24), excellent ON/OFF ratio (120-fold), and good wavelength-compatibility with visible-light-emissive fluorophores (Fluo-4, DsRed2), and which is applicable for real-time dual-colour intracellular Ca(2+) imaging.
