We report the development of a continuous-wave, room-temperature Cr(2+) ZnS laser that is compact and tunable over 700 nm. The laser is pumped by a diode-pumped Er-fiber laser and generates 0.7 W of linearly polarized radiation at 2.35microm , at up to 40% slope efficiency. Cr(2+) ZnS directly diode-pumped at 1.6microm yields polarized radiation that is tunable over 400 nm at up to 25 mW of out...

Although most nanofabrication techniques can control nano/micro particle (NMP) size over a wide range, the majority of NMPs for biomedical applications exhibits a diameter of ~100 nm. Here, the vascular distribution of spherical particles, from 10 to 1,000 nm in diameter, is studied using intravital microscopy and computational modeling. Small NMPs (≤100 nm) are observed to move with Red Blood ...

Objective(s):Iron oxide nanoparticles have found prevalent applications in various fields including drug delivery, cell separation and as contrast agents. Super paramagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles allow researchers and clinicians to enhance the tissue contrast of an area of interest by increasing the relaxation rate of water. In this study, we evaluate the dependency of hydrodynamic si...

Barium strontium sodium niobate (Sr0.7Ba0.3)2NaNb5O15 (SBNN70) crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry showed that SBNN70 crystals have a stoichiometric composition nearly identical to the starting materials. X-ray diffraction of crushed powder indicated that the SBNN70 crystals are orthorhombic with a = 1.2748 nm, b = 1.1402 nm and c = 0.3898 nm. The...

Nanotechnology is new form of technology which has produced a great development in variousfields. Nanoparticles are of the great scientific interest as they are effectively a bridge between bulk material and atomic & molecular structures. Nanoparticles are the particle that have size 1 to 100 nm and possess due to large surface area to volume ratio & smaller size. Different types of nanom...

The spatial organization of genes and chromosomes plays an important role in the regulation of several DNA processes. However, the principles and forces underlying this nonrandom organization are mostly unknown. Despite its small dimension, and thanks to new imaging and biochemical techniques, studies of the budding yeast nucleus have led to significant insights into chromosome arrangement and ...

Proteins that bind DNA so as to reduce its end-to-end length can be dissociated by application of force. The thermodynamics of this process are discussed, with special attention to the case of histones bound to DNA (i.e., a string of nucleosomes, or chromatin fiber). The histone octamer is predicted to be driven off chromatin fiber for tensions >2 piconewtons.

DNA spools, structures in which DNA is wrapped and helically coiled onto itself or onto a protein core, are ubiquitous in nature. We develop a general theory describing the nonequilibrium behavior of DNA spools under linear tension. Two puzzling and seemingly unrelated recent experimental findings, the sudden quantized unwrapping of nucleosomes and that of DNA toroidal condensates under tension...

Ultrafine (2-5 nm) particles of amorphous Ca-Mg co-doped ferrihydrite have been synthesized by surfactant mediated co-precipitation method. The evolution of the amorphous ferrihydrite by Ca-Mg co-doping is quite different from our earlier investigations on individual doping of Ca and Mg. Amorphous phase of ferrihydrite for the present study has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Möss...

The calcineurin-mediated signal transduction via nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFATc1) is involved in upregulating slow myosin heavy chain (MHC) gene expression during fast-to-slow transformation of skeletal muscle cells. This study aims to investigate the Ca2+ signal necessary to activate the calcineurin-NFATc1 cascade in skeletal muscle. Electrostimulation of primary myocytes from rabb...
