Silver nanoparticles capped with nine different sulphonated calix[n]arenes were tested for their anti-bacterial effects against B. subtilis and E. coli at an apparent concentration of 100 nM in calix[n]arene. The results show the para-sulphonato-calix[n]arenes are active against Gram positive bacteria and the derivatives having sulphonate groups at both para and alkyl terminal positions are act...

The response of bacteria in bulk soil and earthworm casts to carbon enrichment was studied by an RNA stable-isotope probing/terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism strategy with (13)C-labeled glucose and acetate. Both the soil microsite status and the carbon enrichment selected rapidly for different active bacterial communities, which resulted in different degradation kinetics. Our st...

DW-224a showed the most potent in vitro activity among the quinolone compounds tested against clinical isolates of gram-positive bacteria. Against gram-negative bacteria, DW-224a was slightly less active than the other fluoroquinolones. The in vivo activities of DW-224a against gram-positive bacteria were more potent than those of other quinolones.

1. Bacteriophage active against four species of bacteria was found in a salt solution extract of house flies. 2. A growth-inhibiting principle, not bacteriophage, active against four other species of bacteria was found to be present in the same extract. 3. An attempt to secure streptococcus bacteriophage by feeding to flies a streptococcus susceptible to the inhibitor but not to the bacteriopha...

A novel antibiotic, designated lydicamycin, was isolated from the fermentation broth of an actinomycete strain identified as Streptomyces lydicus. Lydicamycin was active against Gram-positive bacteria and a certain yeast, but inactive against Gram-negative bacteria.

Oysters collected in late winter, when they were free of Vibrio vulnificus, were exposed in the organism in the laboratory. The oysters effectively concentrated the bacteria from seawater, but when the inoculum was removed, the bacteria were rapidly cleared from the oyster tissues. These results suggest that V. vulnificus may be found in oysters as a result of filtration of the bacteria from se...

In vitro activity of LB20304 against 1,231 clinical isolates was evaluated and compared with those of ciprofloxacin, sparfloxacin, lomefloxacin, and ofloxacin. LB20304 demonstrated the most potent activity against gram-positive bacteria. It was 32- to 64-fold more active than ciprofloxacin against methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, methicillin-resist...

Antimicrobial screening of several lichen species and subsequent isolation and structure elucidation of active compounds revealed that the hydrolysis products of certain lichen metabolites, i.e., depsides, were active against gram-negative bacteria and fungi as well as gram-positive bacteria. The active constituents isolated from Stereocaulon alpinum and Peltigera aphthosa were identified, resp...

Background and Aim: In this research we isolated the bacterial species degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and determined optimal salt concentration for PAH degradation.Materials and Methods: We used naphthalene and anthracene as the only sources of carbon for isolating PAH-degrading bacteria the main culture medium was ONR7a. The bacteria isolated by this method were used for the...

Cefatrizine, a new oral semisynthetic cephalosporin, was evaluated in vitro and in the treatment of 18 patients with acute urinary tract infection, pneumonia, and soft tissue infection. In vitro, it was more active than cephalexin for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It was also more active than cephalothin, cefazolin, and cephapirin against most of the gram-negative bacteria but less ...
