We assessed the frequency of, reasons for and the most common dermatological problems resulting from misuse of topical corticosteroids. We used a questionnaire and skin examination to study patients presenting at the dermatological centre, AI-Sadr Teaching Hospital, Al-Najaf, Iraq during the period March 2001-April 2002. Of 1780 new patients, 140 (7.9%) had misused topical corticosteroids. Abou...
Acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia is a newly recognized pattern of lung injury. It may be idiopathic or secondary to a variety of lung injuries. In this case report we describe a 64-year-old male with acute fibrinous and organizing pneumonia caused by decitabine. He had substantial clinical and radiological improvement after the discontinuation of decitabine and a course of corticosteroids.
Partial hyphemas were created in corticosteroid-treated and untreated rabbit eyes. The disappearance of hyphema ivas complete within 48 hours in control animals. Resorption was delayed for 2 to 5 days in treated eyes. Pretreatment with corticosteroids was necessary for the altered resorption rate. Tonograms demonstrated no significant difference between the two groups. Systemic chloroquine was ...
(III) from (I) and of 21-norpregnan-20-als (IV) from (II) (Brooks & Norymberski, 1953). The last conversion was presumed; it is now established by the isolation of 3,-hydroxy-21-norpregn-5-en-20-al (VI) (as its acetate) from the reaction of pregn-5ene-3f:20fl:21-triol (V) with sodium bismuthate. Reduction with borohydride followed by oxidation with sodium bismuthate was expected to convert 20:2...
Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease, and evidence suggests that children underutilize inhaled corticosteroid ("controller") medications. Drug plans that provide benefits to children vary widely across Canada, and families may face high out-of-pocket costs. As an initial step in a knowledge exchange process aimed at motivating relevant research, a workshop was convened in March 2...
The features associated with 30 childhood deaths from asthma in the period 1962-83 are reviewed. There was an annual death rate of 0.47/100 000 population at risk in the later part of this period in Avon county. Asthma deaths occurred in chronic severe sufferers at night and, although there was usually time for effective treatment, inadequate management probably contributed to the deaths, with ...
This study examines the relationship between clinical quality of care and physician productivity in the public sector clinical setting. This longitudinal study takes place in Jefferson County, Alabama using data from six public sector clinics. Data representing 21 physicians across 13 consecutive quarters representing 44,765 person observations were analyzed. Four variables were selected to rep...
Corticosteroid injections are commonly administered to athletes to relieve symptoms of lateral elbow tendinosis. This report presents a case of almost total rupture of the common extensor origin in a 45 year old female squash player secondary to such a procedure.
Novel treatment strategies are currently emerging for patients with inadequately controlled asthma despite good adherence and trigger avoidance. These strategies serve primarily to reduce or completely avoid long-term oral corticosteroid therapy. A number of these options have already been implemented in practice or will soon be authorized for the treatment of asthma, while others still need to...
Because of their anti-inflammatory activity, corticosteroids generally mask the clinical signs of a contact dermatitis to a corticosteroid preparation. The lesions usually present as chronic dermatitis, and the patients mostly report not exacerbations but failures to respond to corticosteroid therapy. Moreover, masking also occurs with patch-test reactions obtained with corticosteroid preparati...
