Herein we report the synthesis of α-Dawson type POM, Li6[α-P2W18O62]·28H2O, directly from the use of Li2WO4 as the tungstate source. The salt obtained was soluble not only in water but also in a range of polar and non-polar organic solvents, such as benzene.

Chiral ligand-modified polyoxometalates (POMs) were successfully synthesized by the introduction of BINOL into the dititanium-substituted POM in an organic medium and characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. These BINOL-modified POMs were stable in the solution state and showed catalytic activity for asymmetric oxidation of thioanisole.

The encapsulation of polyoxometalates within the large pores of the Zr(iv) biphenyldicarboxylate UiO-67 metal-organic framework has been achieved, for the first time, by direct solvothermal synthesis. The resulting POM@UiO-67 composite materials were fully characterized by XRPD, IR, MAS NMR, N2 porosimetry measurements and cyclic voltammetry.
