In this review talk I discuss the important issues of AGN research and how the new generation of X-ray observatories can help to constrain the physics of AGN. I also present a biased list of the new XMM-Newton and Chandra discoveries and how they have altered our view of AGN. I also present a set of what are the new types of observations that need to be performed to make significant progress in...
We predict a new class of intense, short-duration AGN flares resulting from the tidal disruption of a star or from a disk instability, and show that the rate and power of these flares can readily explain the observed flux and distribution of the highest energy cosmic rays. We describe the photon bursts produced by such AGN flares and show that they may soon be detectable. Subject headings: cosm...
There is a high association of heat shock on the alteration of energy and lipid metabolism. The alterations associated with thermal stress are composed of gene expression changes and adaptation through biochemical responses. Previous study showed that Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN) root extract promoted adipogenic differentiation in murine 3T3-L1 preadipocytes under the normal temperature condition...
Context. A long–standing challenge of observational AGN research is to find type 2 quasars, the luminous analogues of Seyfert–2 galaxies. Aims. We search for luminous narrow–line type 2 AGN, characterise their properties, and compare them with broad–line type 1 AGN. Methods. Combining the ISOCAM parallel survey at 6.7µm with 2MASS, we have selected AGN via near–mid–infrared colours caused by th...
By combining the 2–degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey at 1.4 GHz, the environments of radio loud AGN in the nearby Universe are investigated using both local projected galaxy densities and a friends–of–friends group finding algorithm. Radio–loud AGN are preferentially located in galaxy groups and poor–to–moderate richness galaxy clusters. The AGN fraction appears t...
We have conducted a comprehensive mid-IR spectroscopic investigation of 67 Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Regions (LINERs) using archival observations from the high resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. Using the [NeV] 14 and 24μm lines as active galactic nuclei (AGN) diagnostics, we detect active black holes in 39% of the galaxies in our sa...
Arcsec-resolution VLA observations – newly obtained as well as published – of 40 nearby galaxies are discussed, completing a study of the radio properties of a magnitude-limited sample of nearby galaxies of the composite LINER/H ii type. Our results reveal an overall detection rate of at least 25% AGN candidates among these composite sources. The general properties of these AGN candidates, as c...
We propose a test for non-standard neutrino-neutrino interactions by using ultrahigh energy AGN neutrinos. Such interactions would influence the AGN neutrino flux due to collisions with cosmic background neutrinos. For typical AGN neutrinos we obtain an upper limit for the coupling constant g < 6.4 ·10−3 if the mediator is light and g/(MX/MeV) < 0.013 if the mediator is heavy. We compare our re...
I present a brief review of theory of winds in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Magnetic, radiation, and thermal driving likely operate in AGN. In many cases, it is difficult to distinguish, both from observational and theoretical point of view, which of these wind driving mechanisms dominates in producing winds. Therefore, I focus on specific theoretical predictions which could help to improve ou...
The prevalence of radio-loud AGN activity in present-day massive halos is determined using a sample of 625 nearby groups and clusters selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Brightest group and cluster galaxies (BCGs) are more likely to host a radio– loud AGN than other galaxies of the same stellar mass (by below a factor of two at a stellar mass of ∼ 5 × 1011M⊙, but rising to over an order...
