7«-Methoxy and 7a-formamido derivatives of cefpirome (HR 810) have been synthesized and tested in comparison with cefpirome and some analogues 1 against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Cefpirome and analogues 1 have good activity against Gram-positive and only limited activity against Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria. 7a-Methoxy derivatives 2 show only a slight improvement of activity against G...

Anaerobic bacteria were isolated from all tonsils removed from children at routine tonsillectomy; 75.6% of specimens yielded moderate to heavy growth and 80% of tonsils contained more than one anaerobic species. This recovery rate fell to 56% after a 10-day course of metronidazole before tonsillectomy--in only 14.6% of cases were anaerobes isolated in significant numbers. Surface swabbing of th...

The microbiology of perirectal abscesses in 144 patients was studied. Aerobic or facultative bacteria only were isolated in 13 (9%) instances, anaerobic bacteria only were isolated in 27 (19%) instances, and mixed aerobic and anaerobic flora were isolated in 104 (72%) instances. A total of 325 anaerobic and 131 aerobic or facultative isolates were recovered (2.2 anaerobic isolates and 0.9 aerob...

In a comparison of 1,368 positive blood cultures, a vented Roche Septi-Chek (V-RSC) blood culture bottle was superior to an unvented tryptic soy broth-containing bottle (Difco) for the recovery of all aerobic and facultatively anaerobic microorganisms. Anaerobic bacteria were recovered more frequently and earlier in the unvented tryptic soy broth-containing bottle. A separate comparison of 529 ...

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium considered to be an important pathogen of periodontal disease that is also implicated in adverse pregnancy outcome (APO). Until recently, our understanding of the role of P. gingivalis in APO has been limited and sometimes contradictory. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of past and current research on P. gingiv...

Pseudomonas denitrificans ATCC 13867, a Gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacterium, is known to produce vitamin B12 under aerobic conditions. This paper reports the annotated whole-genome sequence of the circular chromosome of this organism.

tion of the quantitative iole of azotobacter in the nitrogen economy of the soil, especially in the light of the low counts that are found in normal upland soils. (3) It may be an aid in the forthcoming revision of the species designations in this genus. (4) It may explain the sequence of bizarre forms which has been reported. (5) It should be a useful tool in securing cell-free enzyme preparat...

The antimicrobial activities of telavancin and six comparators were evaluated against 460 isolates of anaerobic bacteria. Telavancin demonstrated excellent activity against gram-positive anaerobes (MIC90, 2 microg/ml) and was the most potent agent tested against Clostridium difficile (MIC90, 0.25 microg/ml). As expected, gram-negative isolates were not inhibited by telavancin.

High-molecular-weight chromosomal DNA from Roseburia cecicola, an oxygen-intolerant anaerobe, could be isolated only when the bacterial cells were kept under anaerobic conditions up to the time of cell lysis. When the cells were exposed to oxygen before lysis, the chromosomal DNA degraded. Likewise, linear but not covalently closed circular DNAs degraded in cell extracts of the organism that we...
