We report a new class of anthracene-thiophene-based copolymers, PAT4. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of PAT4 was broad and covered the full range of the solar spectrum. The hole mobility of PAT4 was high, up to 0.037 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). PAT4-based organic solar cells showed promising power conversion efficiencies of 1.7%.

In the title compound, C21H13ClO, the central anthracene system is distorted towards a boat conformation and the outer rings are not coplanar with the central ring [dihedral angles = 7.79 (1) and 11.90 (1)°]. The crystal structure features inversion dimers with graph-set motif R 2 (2)(18) formed by C-H⋯O inter-actions.

In the title compound, C(24)H(18)ClN(3)O(2)S, the dihedral angle between the benzene ring and the anthracene ring system is 41.10 (8)°. The thia-zine ring has a half-chair conformation and the Cl atom is in an axial orientation. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O inter-actions, generating C(8) chains along [100]. A C-H⋯N short contact occurs in the mol-ecule, generating an S(6) ring.
