a series of 2-amino-4-aryl-3-cyano-7-(dimethylamino)-4 h -chromenes was synthesized by condensation of 3-(dimethylamino)phenol, an aromatic aldehyde and malonitrile in ethanol containing piperidine. the assignments of the structure of all synthesized compounds were based on spectral data (ir, mass and 1 h nmr). the cytotoxic activities of the synthesized compounds against six human tumor cell l...

BACKGROUND Colorectal (CRC) and gastric cancer (GC) are associated with meat intake and tobacco smoke, maybe because of aromatic compounds occurring in tobacco smoking and formed during cooking meat. Activated metabolites of these compounds may bind to DNA forming bulky adducts. METHODS Forty-eight subjects diagnosed of GC and 154 of CRC during a 7-year follow-up period in the European Prospe...

The relationship between the formation of chlorinated aromatic (aromatic-Cl) compounds and ferric chloride in the solid phase during a thermal process motivated us to study the chemical characteristics of iron in a model solid sample, a mixture of FeCl(3) x 6H(2)O, activated carbon, and boron nitride, with increasing temperature. Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectr...

Here we report on the gas sensing properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes decorated with sputtered Pt or Pd nanoparticles. Sputtering allows for an oxygen plasma treatment that removes amorphous carbon from the surface of the carbon nanotubes and creates oxygenated surface defects in which metal nanoparticles nucleate within a few minutes. The decoration with the 2 nm Pt or the 3 nm Pd nanop...

This contribution is based on our presentation at the 1 International Symposium on Sensor Science, Paris, 16-20 June 2003. It presents recent results regarding the electrochemical determination of submicromolar and nanomolar concentrations of various carcinogenic substances (nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds, azo compounds, aromatic amino compounds, etc.) using b...

Formation pathways for high-molecular-mass compound growth are presented, showing why reactions between aromatic moieties are needed to explain recent experimental findings. These reactions are then analyzed by using quantum mechanical density functional methods. A sequence of chemical reactions between aromatic compounds (e.g., phenyl) and compounds containing conjugated double bonds (e.g., ac...

Arthrobacter crystallopoietes strain BAB-32, a Gram-positive obligate aerobic actinobacterium having potential application in bioremediation and bioreduction of a few metals, was isolated from rhizosphere soil of Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The draft genome (4.3 Mb) of the strain revealed a few vital gene clusters involved in the metabolism of aromatic compounds, zinc, and sulfur.
