Percutaneous device occlusion of secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) has become an accepted alternative to surgical repair. A variety of devices have been used successfully. However, all of them have limitations. We report our experience with two devices used to close multiple ASDs.
Open heart surgery is rarely performed on patients with heart disease complicated by autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) with the aid of an artificial heart-lung machine. We successfully performed radical open heart surgery on an atrial septal defect (ASD) patient with the complication of AIHA.
Electron beam angiography (EBA) provides excellent anatomic imaging in patients with congenital heart disease and may be useful in the assessment of atrial septal defects (ASDs). We present four patients with an ASD who were considered for percutaneous closure and underwent EBA for measurement of defect size and assessment of rim adequacy, adjacent cardiac structures, and associated congenital ...
In this study, we present a 55-year-old female patient who suffered from atrial septal defect (ASD) and retrosternal toxic goitre simultaneously. The patient had been treated with a 300 mg/day dose of propylthiouracil for 20 days prior to operation. This patient has been operated on for both disorders and has recovered.
Transcatheter closure of secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) is now widely accepted as an alternative to surgical closure. With currently available devices and techniques, approximately 80-90% of secundum ASDs and all PFOs can be closed percutaneously. While many devices are available, the use of any particular device is dictated largely by individual defect anato...
OBJECTIVE This study sought to prove the safety and feasibility of intraoperative device closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) with transthoracic minimal invasion in the older patients. METHODS From January 2006 to December 2009, 47 patients aged 50 years or more and suffered from atrial septal defect were enrolled in our institution. Patients were divided into two groups, 27 of which in grou...
The combination of pulmonary agenesis and anophtalmia or microphthalmia has been described previously. This condition is known as Matthew-Wood syndrome and PDAC syndrome (pulmonary hypoplasia/ agenesis, diaphragmatic hernia/eventration, anophthalmia/microphthalmia, and cardiac defect). We report a sporadic case of female infant with the combination of bilateral microphthalmia, unilateral right ...
A 50-year old patient presented with chronic tussive irritation and chest pain after minimally invasive atrial septal defect (ASD) repair. In the computed tomography (CT) scan, the lung was found to have herniated (Fig. 1a and b). The defect in the chest wall was repaired surgically (Fig. 2). Lung herniation is a rare complication observed more frequently with the advent of minimally invasive c...
INTRODUCTION Percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects (ASD) is becoming more frequent. PATIENTS AND METHOD From October 1997 to October 2002, 209 patients, age 0.4-70 (mean 19.5) years, were catheterized to close an ASD or patent foramen ovale (PFO). Transesophageal echocardiography was performed simultaneously in all patients. Two hundred and six patients had ASD (25 multiple ASDs) and ...
Background: Congenital heart disease is the most common congenital malformations in newborns. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and types of congenital heart disease in babies born in the city of Khorramabad. Materials and Methods: The present study was a descriptive cross-sectional. Sampling method was census. All babies born in the city of Khorramabad from 2007 to 2011, w...
