BACKGROUND DNA barcoding has recently been proposed as a promising tool for the rapid species identification in a wide range of animal taxa. Two broad methods (distance and monophyly-based methods) have been used. One method is based on degree of DNA sequence variation within and between species while another method requires the recovery of species as discrete clades (monophyly) on a phylogenet...
Elucidating the ecological mechanisms underlying community assembly in subtropical forests remains a central challenge for ecologists. The assembly of species into communities can be due to interspecific differences in habitat associations, and there is increasing evidence that these associations may have an underlying phylogenetic structure in contemporary terrestrial communities. In other wor...
Assume that 2m red points and 2n blue points are given on the lattice Z2 in the plane R2. We show that if they are in general position, that is, if at most one point lies on each vertical line and horizontal line, then there exists a rectangular cut that bisects both red points and blue points. Moreover, if they are not in general position, namely if some vertical and horizontal lines may conta...
We study a class of geometric stabbing/covering problems for sets of line segments, rays, and lines in the plane. While we demonstrate that the problems on sets of horizontal/vertical line segments are NP-complete, we show that versions involving (parallel) rays or lines are polynomially solvable.
DNA barcoding seeks to assemble a standardized reference library for DNA-based identification of eukaryotic species. The utility and limitations of this approach need to be tested on well-characterized taxonomic assemblages. Here we provide a comprehensive DNA barcode analysis for North American birds including 643 species representing 93% of the breeding and pelagic avifauna of the USA and Can...
Anthropogenic pressures on aquatic systems have placed a renewed focus on biodiversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates. By combining classical taxonomy and DNA barcoding we identified 39 species of caddisflies from the Crooked River, a unique and sensitive system in the southernmost arctic watershed in British Columbia. Our records include three species never before recorded in British Columbia: ...
