congenital factor x deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive bleeding disorder that presents with variable bleeding tendency and prolonged coagulation tests, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time. thromboembolic events have not been reported in patients with factor x deficiency yet. herein, we report a patient with factor x deficiency who had recurrent venous thromboembolic events.

We describe a 16-year-old girl and her 41-year-old father who both had a bleeding tendency, dramatic prolongation of all standard clotting assays, undetectable levels of plasma protein C activity, and low or borderline levels of factors X, XI and XII. Plasma and serum electrophoresis revealed a minor peak following the main alpha(1) globulin peak, of which the proportion was increased. Platelet...

Acquired haemophilia A (AHA) is a rare hemorrhagic disease caused by an autoantibody against coagulation factor VIII. Nonhaemophiliac patients develop autoantibodies (inhibitors) directed against the factor VIII circulating coagulation protein. Disease is associated with an increased morbidity and mortality. Inhibitors against FVIII induce acute and life-threatening hemorrhagic diathesis becaus...

The bleeding tendency in acute chloroform intoxication is due to deficiency in both plasma fibrinogen and plasma prothrombin. If the disorder is mild, no bleeding occurs. However, the prothrombin falls to rather low levels, although the fibrinogen falls only moderately. A bleeding tendency may also be produced by giving small repeated doses of chloroform. In such experiments, the hemorrhagic te...

A 57-year-old man presented with a spontaneous upper-extremity hematoma and compartment syndrome. The patient experienced excessive bleeding following evacuation of the hematoma, and the results of routine coagulation studies were normal. Factor XIII activity was undetectable using a photometric assay, and the presence of an inhibitor was detected with mixing studies. Bleeding was controlled wi...

We report a case of fat-soluble vitamin deficiency in a 14-year old boy who had chronic duodenal obstruction. He presented with periodic unexplained bleeding tendency. The laboratory results showed positive fat globules in stool and prolonged prothrombin time. His further investigation revealed low plasma vitamin A and undetectable plasma vitamin E. After parenteral vitamin K and oral vitamin A...

To evaluate the association of inherited coagulopathies and acquired conditions (e.g. hypertension, aspirin use) with emergency department admission due to epistaxis. Patients admitted to the emergency department with epistaxis were included. A questionnaire for personal and family history of any bleeding disorder was used. Physical examination including ear, nose and throat examination was per...

Fifty seven patients with schistosomiasis of the liver and spleen in both the compensated and decompensated states and 15 non-bilharzial subjects were studied. Fibrinogen, plasminogen, fibrinogen/fibrin degradation products, alpha 2-macroglobulin, antithrombin III and Cl-activator concentrations were evaluated in an attempt to assess abnormalities at various stages of the disease. The results s...

Chloroform has been used extensively in experimental work for the production of liver injury. In pronounced intoxication there is extensive necrosis of the liver, and the animal shows marked disturbance of blood coagulation. Clots which form are flabby and are ineffectual in controlling hemorrhage from minor incisions. The work of Doyon (1) suggested that there is a decrease in the plasma fibri...
