BACKGROUND There are limited choice of antimicrobial agents to treat infection with metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We evaluate the antimicrobial effects of aztreonam alone, colistin alone and the 3-drug combination of aztreonam, ceftazidime and amikacin on 23 strains of metallo-beta-lactamase-producing P. aeruginosa by time-killing tests. METHODS Strains used were fr...

Ceftazidime is a broad spectrum antibiotic administered mainly by the parenteral route, and it is especially effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The period of time in which serum levels exceed the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) is an important pharmacodynamic parameter for its efficacy. One of the forms to extend this period is to administer the antibiotic by continuous infusion, ...

One hundred clinical isolates resistant to ceftazidime and/or cefotaxime were examined for susceptibility to cefepime. The most frequently encountered ceftazidime-cefotaxime-resistant strains belonged to the genera Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, and Citrobacter. Among these strains, 92% were resistant to cefoperazone, 91% were resistant to cefotaxime, 84% were resistant to ceftazidime, and 6% were ...

The pharmacokinetics of ceftazidime and moxalactam were compared after intravenous and intramuscular administration of single 1-g doses to eight healthy volunteers in a crossover study. The bioavailability of the antibiotics after administration by either route was almost complete. Both drugs had similar areas under the serum curves. Significant differences between ceftazidime and moxalactam we...

Ceftazidime-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains began to appear when ceftazidime usage was increased in two unrelated Chicago hospitals. These strains produced a beta-lactamase with an isoelectric point of 5.6 (RP-5.6) and strong hydrolyzing activity against ceftazidime. Two different restriction digest profiles were associated with the ceftazidime resistance plasmids. A second beta-lactama...

OBJECTIVE To compare the genetic environments of ampC genes in different Acinetobacter baumannii isolates showing different levels of beta-lactam resistance. METHODS The patterns of beta-lactam resistance and beta-lactamase production were investigated for 42 A. baumannii clinical strains. The MICs of various beta-lactams were determined in the presence or absence of the class C cephalosporin...

Sir, The emergence of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia as a cause of life-threatening disease, particularly in severely immunocompromised patients, is becoming increasingly prominent. S. maltophilia is inherently resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents. A high-dose regimen of cotrimoxazole is the treatment of choice for this infection, but cotrimoxazole resistance has been documented. In additio...

A clinical strain of Escherichia coli isolated from pleural liquid with high levels of resistance to cefotaxime, ceftazidime, and aztreonam harbors a novel CTX-M gene (bla(CTX-M-32)) whose amino acid sequence differs from that of CTX-M-1 by a single Asp240-Gly substitution. Moreover, by site-directed mutagenesis we demonstrated that this replacement is a key event in ceftazidime hydrolysis

Ceftazidime was considerably more active than cefuroxime against 180 strains of resistant species of nosocomial gram-negative bacteria. In terms of antibacterial spectrum and intrinsic activity, ceftazidime is an improvement upon existing beta-lactam antibiotics in clinical use and can be regarded as a possible alternative to gentamicin.

JAVAD GHANAAT,

In vitro evaluation of ceftazidime antimicrobial activity in infections caused by burn and its comparison to the other antibiotics is presented. In vitro tests for susceptibility to ceftazidime and other antibiotics were carried out on 744 bacterial strains collected from burn infections. The results have shown that generally ceftazidime was more active against Pseudomollas aeruginosa an...
